DENTON, TX-- The Southern Jaguars women's basketball team got off to a slow start in the first quarter and never could recover falling to University of North Texas Monday afternoon in front of 1,286 fans inside The Super Pit. Final score was 49-65.
Depite only being down by three-points going into the half, the Lady Jags just couldn't get the ball to fall offensively in the second half.
Raven White has found her rhythm in the paint for the Lady Jags for the second straight game leading them in scoring with 12 points, six rebounds and 2 steals in twenty-five minutes of play. Kayla Watson chipped in eleven points and two renounds in a team-high twenty-nine minutes of play. Aleighyah Fontenot finished the night with eight points, three assists and a game-high four steals. Diamond Hunter and Nakia Kincey played a huge role in the Lady Jags get second chance points by grabbling five boards each.
"The ladies came out and played extremely hard and that effort gave us an opportunity to keep the score close. We had some very good looks at the basket early but could not get anything to fall offensively said
Carlos Funchess, SU Head Coach. I feel like we needed to score around 65 points to win the game and we came up a little short. I can see progress but we just have to keep working to get better. We have another big game coming up on Wednesday so we will start getting prepared for that one."
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Mean Green to 24 turnovers, picking up 11 points off turnovers. SU played all fifteen players with ten landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 38 percent for the game (31-80) and 17 percent from behind the arc (3-18). SU shot 65 percent from the charity stripe finishing (11-17)
Aleah Pressley led the Lady Wildcats with 17 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and 1 steal. Kayja Jackson chopped in 16 points along with two rebounds.
UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action on December 15th as the travel to Stllwater, Oklahoma to take on The Lady Cowgirls of Oklahoma State. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 Pm inside Gallagher-Iba Arena on the campus of Oklahoma State University.
