COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Southern opened the 2021-22 season on the road at #23 Texas A&M and the Lady Aggies gave the Lady Jaguars all they can handle. Final score was 92-32 inside Reed Arena on the campus of Texas A&M.
Freshman guard,
Aleighyah Fontenot led SU in scoring in her first road game of her young career, finishing the night with 11 points and one assist and one rebound. Chloe Fleming and Genovea Johnson chipped in five points each. Johnson had a team-high four rebounds in nineteen minutes of play.
"I thought we did a good job executing early in the game but we couldn't get a shot to fall. In the second quarter we committed entirely too many turnovers and they capitalized on our mistakes, said head coach
Carlos Funchess. We have to learn from this game and work to get better."
The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Generals to 15 turnovers, picking up 5 points off turnovers. SU played all thirteen players with eight landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 9 percent for the game (9-47) and 22 percent from behind the arc (4-18). SU shot 83 percent from the charity stripe finishing (10-12)
Jordan Nixon led the Lady Aggies with 13 points and four assists. Sahara Jones and Destiny Pitts added 12 point each.
UP NEXT
Southern will be back in action on Monday, November 15th at Marquette in Milwaukee, WI. The game is slated for a 12 PM tipoff.
