BATON ROUGE, LA--The wait is over, Lacumba has arrived on campus. Southern University along with Attorney Tony Clayton unveiled the statue of Lacumba on Saturday, October 23, 2021, during the first homecoming back on the yard since 2019. The bronze Lacumba was positioned in the middle of the Tony Clayton Championship Plaza. Mr. Clayton was accompanied by his wife Paula, and a few other notable individuals including Athletic Director
Roman Banks, Chairman of the Advancement Committee of the SU System, James Brown, and President of Southern University Ray Belton.
Southern University initially broke ground to build the plaza on April 19, 2019 and are steadily making additions to the Tony Clayton Championship Plaza. In the next year, Director of Development of the Southern University System Foundation, Robert Harrison states that this is just the first significant unveiling and there will be additional features added to the Lacumba statue and Championship Plaza including more athletes engraved on the columns inside and out and bleachers.
Tony Clayton expressed his goal of adding a million-dollar rec center on campus and a hundred-thousand dollar granite fountain surrounded by water to lift Lacumba up, set for the end of the year.
