INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Southern University Director of Basketball Academics, Ventric Fletcher was selected to participate in the Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute as a member of the 2020 cohort. 2020 will be the first of a two-year program for Fletcher as he is one of just 20 minority athletic administrators comprising this year's class.
 
"We strive to think big, and in order to positively impact student-athletes and college athletics, you must develop future leaders," Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Trayvean Scott said. "The NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute's selection of Ventric enhances the initiatives we work on through professional development year round."
 
The Leadership Institute's mission is to elevate participants' leadership skills to accelerate their professional growth "while enhancing their ability to excel within their current roles." It provides unique programming to assist in strategically planning and executing a career in athletics administration. Over the course of a calendar year, Fletcher will participate in two five-day programs that focus on professional development by engaging in several areas of athletic administration (budgets, fundraising, strategic planning, student-athlete well-being, diversity and inclusion, compliance, behavioral styles, etc.).
 
"Being selected to participate in the Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute is truly an honor," Fletcher said. "Throughout my career, I've had mentors, colleagues, and have worked for leaders who stressed the importance of professional development and networking as a tool for growth.  To be able to participate in such a program—one that has fostered the development of many of the nation's minority athletic executives is unbelievable. It is a testament to my growth individually and the growing stature of the Southern University Department of Athletics.  Following in the footsteps of a former athletic director and our current Deputy Athletic Director & Chief Operating Officer assures me that I am on the right path.  This is one of the crowning achievements of my career thus far.  I want to thank our leadership and the NCAA for supporting me in this endeavor."
 
Fletcher is in his second stint at Southern University.  He is responsible for the management and advancement of academics for the Men's Basketball program.  He also serves as department lead for at risk students as well as those with learning disabilities/deficiencies.
