Box Score
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Southern University forced 26 turnovers and had its bench outscore Prairie View A&M 28-0 to avoid going 0-2 in conference play during Monday night's 65-55 road win at the William J. Nicks Arena.
The 10-point win helped the Jaguars (4-7, 1-1) avert going winless after the first two Southwestern Athletic Conference games for only the second time in head coach Sandy Pugh's 16-year career. Southern's last 0-2 start came during the 2009-10 season, which ended with the Jaguars claiming both the SWAC's regular season and tournament title.
Four Jaguars scored in double figues lead by sophomore Briana Green's 13 points of the bench. Green, who shot 4 of 9 from the field and 5 for 8 from free throw line, added a team high five assists. Cortnei Purnell, Britney Washington and Ashley Williams each scored 10 points as the Jaguars improved their field goal percentage to 40 percent after an uncharacteristic 33 percent in Saturday's loss at Texas Southern.
During the third quarter, Southern and Prairie View (5-6, 1-1) exchanged leads six times and the game was tied five times. With the score tied at 51, Southern forward Ashley Williams made a 3-pointer and recorded a steal that lead to a Jadea Brundidge free throw before Brundidge and Green layups sandwiched a Lamarie Cole basket capping and 8-2 Jaguar run.
Leading 59-53 with 3:16 left, Southern converted layups on three of their final five possesions to close out the Lady Panthers.
Cole finished with a game-high 26 points, while Jeronia Allen added 12 points and Larissa Scott had 14 rebounds.
Southern returns to Baton Rouge to host Grambling State, who is 2-0 in SWAC play, Saturday, Jan. 9. The Jaguars conference home opener will be broadcast on Cox Sports Television with Todd Kalas and James Verrett.
