Alase Advances to Quarterfinals at NCAA East Regional

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Three Southern University track and field athletes competed in the NCAA East Regional First Rounds on Wednesday and Thursday at the Kentucky Outdoor Track and Field Facility in Lexington, Kentucky.
 
One of the top hurdlers in the world, Tashina Alase wasted no time securing her spot in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles. Needing a top-three finish in her heat to earn an automatic qualification, Alase cruised to a time of 13.00 seconds to place second in heat one. The senior finished 11th overall in the preliminary round and will compete in heat two of the quarterfinals, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
 
Freshman Taylor Hankton made her NCAA regional debut in the 400-meter hurdles. Hankton placed sixth in her heat and finished 36th overall after posting a time of 59.43 seconds.
 
On the men's side, Koi Wedderburn was the lone Jaguar in action Wednesday. The junior recorded a mark of 6.63 meters in the long jump to place 42nd overall.
 
Up Next
Roman Smith and Keith Fowler will represent the Jaguars in the high jump on Friday. Both competitors are scheduled to compete in the opening flight beginning at 1 p.m.
