EUGENE, Ore. – Southern University's
Tashina Alase continued her historic season on Thursday evening, winning her semifinal heat to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships final in the 100-meter hurdles at Hayward Field.
After waiting until the third and final semifinal heat, Alase knew she would need either a top-two finish for an automatic berth or a time faster than 12.86 to secure a spot in Saturday's final.
Although it was not her fastest race of the season, the senior delivered when it mattered most.
Alase got off to a slow start out of the blocks but steadily gained ground in a tightly contested race. The top four runners crossed the finish line separated by just 0.036 seconds. Alase surged ahead in the closing meters to win the heat with a time of 12.894 seconds, narrowly edging Texas A&M's Jaiya Covington, who finished second in 12.899.
Clemson's Oneka Wilson placed third in 12.926, while Oregon's Micaela DeMello finished fourth in 12.930.
