BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University dramatically capped Senior Day Saturday afternoon, holding off a furious Alabama A&M comeback for a 15-13 victory at Lee-Hines Stadium to secure its fifth consecutive SWAC weekend series sweep and extend its conference winning streak to 15 games.
The Jaguars (27-21, 20-7 SWAC) erupted for 12 runs over the first two innings and never relinquished the lead, though Alabama A&M nearly erased the deficit in a wild back-and-forth finale.
Ryan Hunter and Jacoby Radcliffe led Southern offensively with four RBI's apiece. Hunter finished 3-for-5 with a home run and a triple, while Radcliffe delivered the game's biggest swing with a grand slam during Southern's eight-run second inning.
Southern jumped ahead immediately when Hunter opened the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run before the Jaguars added three more runs in the frame. The offense stayed hot in the second as Radcliffe's grand slam highlighted an inning that pushed Southern's advantage to 12-4.
Alabama A&M (10-44, 4-26 SWAC) battled back behind Tervell Johnson and Charles Morris, who each drove in four runs. Johnson's two-run homer in the eighth inning pulled the Bulldogs within one run at 13-12 before Southern responded with two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Radcliffe sparked the rally with a lead-off double before stealing third, and sacrifice RBI's from Kenyon Hughes and Damien Johnson extended the lead to 15-12. Genesis Prosper then recorded the final four outs to seal the victory.
