Southern Holds Off UAPB Rally, Clinches Series With Ninth Straight Win

BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern built an early cushion and delivered just enough late to withstand a furious Arkansas-Pine Bluff comeback, securing a 10-8 victory Saturday to clinch the weekend series and extend its winning streak to nine games.

The Jaguars jumped out with three runs in the first inning and never trailed, though UAPB made things tense with a four-run sixth and two more in the eighth. Southern answered each surge, including a key insurance run in the eighth, to seal the win. 

Southern's offense set the tone early, capitalizing on control issues and timely hitting. The Jaguars scored three in the first and added three more in the third to take a 6-2 lead. They stretched the margin to 8-2 before UAPB stormed back with five hits in the sixth inning to cut it to 8-6. 

After trading runs late, Southern leaned on its bullpen, with Caleb Ellis shutting the door over the final 1.2 innings to preserve the victory. 

Keys to the Game

  • Fast start: Southern plated three runs in the first inning and never relinquished control, forcing UAPB to play from behind all night. 
  • Timely responses: Each time UAPB rallied, Southern answered — including a crucial eighth-inning RBI triple from Jacoby Radcliffe. 
  • Bullpen finish: Despite allowing eight runs, Southern's bullpen limited damage late, with Ellis closing the final two frames scoreless. 
  • Capitalizing on free passes: Southern drew seven walks and took advantage of hit batters and wild pitches to generate early offense.
