Southern Erupts Late, Powers Past Alcorn State 14-5 to Complete Series Sweep

LORMAN, MS — Southern University used a pair of explosive innings and a dominant relief effort to roll past Alcorn State 14-5 on Sunday at McGowan Stadium, completing a Southwestern Athletic Conference series sweep.

The Jaguars broke open a tight game with a five-run fifth inning and added six more runs in the ninth to pull away from the Braves. Southern finished with 10 hits and capitalized on five Alcorn State errors, while its pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run.

Southern struck first with a sacrifice fly from Jaylon Lucky in the opening inning and added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Alcorn State responded in the third inning, scoring four unearned runs to grab a 4-2 advantage.

The Jaguars answered decisively in the fifth.Kameron Byrd drew a bases-loaded walk, Jacoby Radcliffe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Omari Johnson delivered a two-run double as part of a five-run frame that flipped the score to 7-4.

Southern added an insurance run in the seventh on Kenyon Hughes RBI triple before putting the game out of reach in the ninth. The Jaguars scored six runs in the final inning, highlighted by Byrd two-run double and a series of walks and defensive miscues by Alcorn State.
