Track and Field Sweeps Titles at Strawberry Relays

HAMMOND, La. — Southern University turned in a dominant showing at the SLU Strawberry Relays, picking up the team win in both the men's and women's side.
 
The Jaguars secured 146 points, 17 ahead of the host Southeastern. The Lady Jaguars finished with 174 points, 78.5 points ahead of second-place Xavier of Louisiana.
 
The Jaguars were especially strong in the field events. On the women's side, Ariyonna Edmond led a podium sweep in the hammer throw with a winning mark of 50.34m, while also claiming gold in the shot put (13.57m). Ayanna Hunt followed closely, placing second in the shot put (13.51m) and third in the hammer, before adding another victory in the discus (45.28m). Kinzli Zenon added another field event title with a first-place finish in the javelin (36.74m).
 
Southern continued its dominance in the jumps, sweeping the top three spots in the women's long jump as Peyton Funderburk (6.04m), Azariah Foster (5.88m), and Kendall Cook (5.74m) went 1-2-3. Sahnya Lathon captured the triple jump title (12.16m) and added a win in the high jump (1.70m), highlighting a strong all-around performance.
 
On the men's side, Michael Fulton secured top-three finishes in both the hammer throw (3rd, 50.61m) and shot put (3rd, 15.72m). Everett Alberty added a third-place finish in the javelin (54.70m), while Reginald King led the way in the horizontal jumps, winning the long jump (7.39m) and triple jump (14.99m). Roman Smith and Keith Fowler went 1-2 in the high jump, clearing 2.10m and 2.00m, respectively.
 
On the track, Southern's relay teams delivered standout performances. The women's 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads both captured first place with times of 45.79 and 3:48.26, respectively. The men's 4x100 relay also claimed gold (40.93), while the 4x400 team placed third (3:28.52).
 
Individually, Christon Washington won the 110-meter hurdles (14.39), while Larry Paul III took the 400-meter hurdles title (57.11). In the middle-distance events, Marcus Delcy and Keeton Johnson finished 1-2 in the 800 meters with nearly identical times (1:54.13, 1:54.17). Bryce Campbell added a fourth-place finish in the 1500 meters.
 
On the women's side, Jayla Franklin sprinted to victory in the 200 meters (25.59), while Kendall Cook (3rd, 100m) and Sincere Wilson (5th, 100m) added top-eight finishes in the short sprints. London Harden placed eighth in the 800 meters, and Rayah Arnold finished seventh in the 1500 meters.
 
Southern capped the meet with a win in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, as Shaquka Tyrell crossed first in 14:13.56.
