Alase Headlines Southern’s Top Finishes at Pelican Relays

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University delivered an impressive showing at the Pelican Relays, highlighted by multiple event titles, top-eight finishes, and several marks that rank among the best in both HBCU and NCAA Division I competition.
 
Leading the way was Tashina Alase, who turned in a dominant weekend on the track. Alase captured the women's 100-meter hurdles title in 13.01, a performance that ranks No. 1 among HBCUs and No. 5 in NCAA Division I this season. She also secured victories in the women's 100m (11.68, HBCU No. 17) and 200m (24.07), completing a standout sprint-hurdle sweep.
 
On the men's side, Omari Dupas claimed the 100m title in 10.49 and added a runner-up finish in the 200m (21.47). The Jaguars also saw Christon Washington win the 110m hurdles (14.19), contributing to a strong showing in the sprint events.
 
In the field, Ariyonna Edmond delivered one of the top performances of the meet, winning the women's hammer throw with a mark of 52.57m, which ranks No. 4 among HBCUs. She later added another victory in the shot put (13.37m, HBCU No. 7). Freshman Ayanna Hunt also impressed, winning the discus (46.47m) and placing second in the hammer throw (51.77m, HBCU No. 5) while finishing third in the shot put.
 
Southern continued to dominate in the jumps, as Reginald King captured the triple jump title with a leap of 15.09m, ranking No. 7 among HBCUs and No. 55 in Division I. Koi Wedderburn added a win in the long jump (7.35m), while Peyton Funderburk led a strong women's long jump group with a first-place finish (5.87m). Azariah Foster (2nd, HBCU No. 8), Sincere Wilson (5th, HBCU No. 37), Kendall Cook (6th, HBCU No. 44), and Demetria Harris (7th, HBCU No. 50) all placed inside the top eight.
 
On the track, Keeton Johnson highlighted the distance group with a win in the men's 1500m (4:07.55, HBCU No. 27) and added an eighth-place finish in the 800m. Marcus Delcy secured a victory in the men's 800m (1:53.53), while Bryce Campbell placed third in the 1500m (HBCU No. 58). Rayah Arnold added a runner-up finish in the women's 1500m (HBCU No. 57), and Shaquka Tyrell finished seventh in the women's 800m (HBCU No. 97).
 
In the throws, Michael Fulton placed second in the hammer (50.34m) and second in the shot put (15.76m) while also finishing seventh in the discus. Haywood Gallien added a third-place finish in the hammer and eighth in the discus. Layla Spann-McDonald contributed with a third-place finish in the hammer (HBCU No. 7) and seventh in the discus (HBCU No. 57).
 
Southern's relay teams also made a strong impact. The men's 4x100m relay team took first in 40.73, ranking No. 11 among HBCUs and No. 98 in Division I. The men's 4x800m relay added another victory (8:12.57), while the men's 4x400m relay placed second (HBCU No. 28). The women's 4x100m relay secured a runner-up finish (47.28, HBCU No. 25).
 
Additional top-eight finishes included Keith Fowler (3rd, high jump; 6th, long jump), Everett Alberty (2nd, javelin, HBCU No. 2), Sahnya Lathon (2nd, high jump; 3rd, triple jump), Mashayla Lazard (2nd, high jump, HBCU No. 8), Mar'Rica Trone (2nd, triple jump, HBCU No. 14), and Demetria Harris (4th, triple jump).
