BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University senior
Tashina Alase has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 60-meter hurdles. The national meet will take place March 13–14 at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Alase has delivered a historic indoor campaign for the Jaguars. The Minnesota native broke the school record in the 60m hurdles in three consecutive meets, highlighted by a blazing 8.04 in the preliminaries at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championships. She returned in the finals to claim gold with a meet-record time of 8.17.
Her preliminary mark of 8.04 ranks tied for 11th nationally this season and she enters the championship field as the only non–Power 4 athlete to qualify in the event. Alase becomes the first Southern athlete to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships since Brian Johnson won a national title in the long jump in 2003 and the first female Jaguar to reach the meet since Erica Burrell placed fourth in the 60 meters in 2000.
In four 60m hurdle appearances this season, Alase has posted three podium finishes, including a conference title, solidifying her place among the nation's elite as she prepares to represent Southern on the sport's biggest indoor stage.
The prelims for the 60-meter hurdles is set for 6:45 p.m. with the top 8 advancing to the finals on Saturday at 5:50 p.m.
