FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Less than a year after having her season cut short by injury, Tashina Alase capped one of the most impressive indoor seasons in Southern history with a 12th-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday inside the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
 
When she stepped onto the track for the prelims, Alase found herself in rare company for a Southern athlete, becoming just the fourth female in program history to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
 
Entering the meet with the 11th-fastest time in the nation during the regular season, the Minnesota native was placed in lane two of the first heat. The only non–Power 4 athlete in the field, Alase improved upon her Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship time of 8.17 but fell just short of advancing to the final.
 
She clocked an 8.15 in the prelims, finishing fifth in her heat and 12th overall. The performance earned Alase Second Team All-American honors.
 
The senior became the first Southern athlete to reach the NCAA Indoor Championships since Brian Johnson won the national title in the long jump in 2003, and the first Lady Jaguar to compete at the meet since Erica Burrell finished fourth in the 60 meters.
 
Alase joins Burrell, Tammy Stevenson (1985, long jump) and Rhonda Scott (1984, 55-meter hurdles) as the only Lady Jaguars to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
