Alase Breaks School Record, Again

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Just one week after setting the school record in the 60-meter hurdles, Tashina Alase raised the bar once again Friday at the UAB Green and Gold Invitational inside the Birmingham CrossPlex.
 
Alase clocked an 8.08 in the 60m hurdles preliminaries, improving her own school record by nearly a tenth of a second. The performance ranks as the eighth-fastest time nationally this season. She also added a fourth-place finish in the women's 60 meters and placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.40.
 
Southern's sprinters turned in strong showings throughout the meet. Kaden Lewis captured first place in the men's 60m finals, crossing the line in 6.86, while Omari Dupas followed with a fifth-place finish in 6.92. On the women's side, Jayla Franklin placed ninth, and Kendall Cook finished 14th in the 60 meters.
 
In the men's 200 meters, Dupas placed 20th, while Lewis finished 28th. Rondisa Williams added a fifth-place finish in the women's 200 meters.
 
The Jaguars dominated the high jump events, led by senior Roman Smith, who captured first place on the men's side after clearing 2.06 meters (6-9). Southern placed three athletes in the top five, as Herman Batiste finished second and freshman Keith Fowler took fifth, also clearing 2.06 meters.
 
On the women's side, Sahnya Lathon earned first place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.71 meters (5-7.25), securing another event victory for the Jaguars.
 
Southern continued to post solid results on the track in the 400 meters. Darryl Washington placed ninth, while Ronald Johnson finished 13th on the men's side. T'La Dewitt led the women with a fifth-place finish.
 
In middle-distance action, freshman Keeton Johnson delivered one of the day's top performances, winning the men's 800 meters in 1:53.80. Marcus Delcy followed with a sixth-place finish, and Johnson also placed 12th in the mile. For the women, London Harden and Quenteria Brits finished 23rd and 25th, respectively, in the 800 meters.
 
Southern's success extended to the horizontal jumps, as Koi Wedderburn captured first place in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.13 meters (23-4.75). Reginald King added an eighth-place finish. On the women's side, Peyton Funderburk placed second, while Azariah Foster finished sixth and Jayla Clark took seventh.
 
In the throws, Michael Fulton placed seventh in the men's shot put and followed with an eighth-place finish in the weight throw. Ayanna Hunt led the women's throwers with a seventh-place finish in the shot put.
 
The meet concluded with the men's 4x400-meter relay, which turned in a strong performance to place third overall with a time of 3:15.92.
