BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University softball team nearly swept the Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards, the league announced Wednesday.

Abigail Mitchell was named SWAC Hitter of the Week, Jordynn Jennings earned Pitcher of the Week honors and Laila Clark was selected as Co-Newcomer of the Week after leading the Lady Jaguars to a 4-0 weekend at the Leonard Moody HBCU Invitational.

Mitchell turned in a career performance at the plate. The sophomore paced Southern with eight hits and a blistering .667 batting average while driving in nine runs. She opened the weekend by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs against Howard, highlighted by a game-tying triple. Mitchell followed with hits in each of the next two contests before closing the tournament in dominant fashion. In the finale against Maryland Eastern Shore, she went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBIs, including her first career home run, helping power Southern to a run-rule victory.

Jennings anchored the pitching staff with 11.2 scoreless innings across three appearances. The junior secured a save against Claflin, entering in the fifth inning and tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit relief. She then picked up wins in both of Saturday's games. Against North Carolina A&T, Jennings delivered 5.1 shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Later that day, she entered in the third inning versus Maryland Eastern Shore and limited the Hawks to one hit over 3.2 scoreless frames. For the season, the California native owns the second-lowest ERA in the SWAC at 1.87.

Clark, a transfer from William Carey University, enjoyed a breakout weekend at the plate. She launched a grand slam to left field against Claflin, providing the decisive runs in the contest. Clark followed with another home run against North Carolina A&T, a three-run shot that proved to be the game-winner, marking the first time in her collegiate career she homered in back-to-back games. The Addis native capped her weekend with her first multi-hit performance of the season against Maryland Eastern Shore, going 2-for-3 with a triple and three additional RBIs.
