TALLAHASSEE, FL — Fueled by another electrifying performance from Southwestern Athletic Conference rushing leader Trey Holly and a relentless defense spearheaded by Michael Williams II, Southern marched into Tallahassee and delivered a commanding 42-14 victory over Florida A&M, snapping a quarter-century of frustration on the Rattlers' home turf.
Behind a punishing ground attack led by Southwestern Athletic Conference rushing leader Trey Holly and a defense that delivered one game-changing play after another, Southern overwhelmed Florida A&M 42-14, ending a quarter-century drought at the Rattlers' home stadium.
It wasn't just a victory for the Jaguars. It was a statement. Holly ran through, around , and past the Florida A&M defense, piling up 206 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns. His fifth 100-yard rushing performance of the season provided the offensive spark, but it was Michael Williams II who delivered the play that turned a commanding lead into a rout.
Williams intercepted Florida A&M quarterback Armond Parker and raced 98 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, delivering a crushing blow to the Rattlers' comeback hopes. He finished with two interceptions and 115 return yards, anchoring a Southern defense that kept Florida A&M scoreless in three of four quarters.
The victory improved Southern to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in SWAC play, while Florida A&M fell to 2-7 and 1-4.
Holly Sets the Tone as Southern Takes Control
Southern made its intentions clear from the opening quarter: The Jaguars were going to run the football, control the trenches and force Florida A&M to stop them.
The Rattlers never found an answer. Holly opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, finishing a nine-play, 66-yard drive that established Southern's physical presence. Champ Davis followed with a 10-yard touchdown run late in the opening period, giving the Jaguars a 14-0 advantage.
Florida A&M briefly threatened to make it a contest when Parker connected with Jayquan Reid for a 23-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.
That momentum lasted just 21 seconds. On Southern's next possession, Holly exploded through the defense for a 65-yard touchdown, showcasing the speed, vision , and explosiveness that have made him the SWAC's leading rusher. The run pushed Southern ahead 21-7 and sent a clear message: The Jaguars had no intention of allowing their long-awaited breakthrough to slip away.
Holly averaged 8.2 yards per carry, consistently turning routine handoffs into significant gains and keeping Florida A&M's defense on its heels. His production also opened opportunities for the rest of Southern's offense.
Quarterback Christian Johnson operated efficiently, completing seven of nine passes for 112 yards and a touchdown, including a 10-yard scoring connection with Aiden Valdez that extended the Jaguars' lead to 28-7. Southern didn't need a high-volume passing attack. With Holly controlling the ground game, Johnson needed only to manage the offense, make timely throws and protect the football. He did all three.
Williams Delivers the Defensive Knockout
If Holly was the engine behind Southern's offense, Williams supplied the afternoon's defining moment. With Florida A&M attempting to stay within striking distance in the second quarter, Williams read Parker's pass, stepped in front of the intended receiver and turned the interception into a spectacular 98-yard touchdown return.
The defensive score pushed Southern's lead to 35-7 and effectively put the Rattlers in a hole they could not escape. Williams still had impact to make.
His second interception further disrupted Florida A&M's passing attack, giving Southern two takeaways and helping the Jaguars win the turnover battle without committing a turnover themselves.
Florida A&M managed another touchdown before halftime, with Corey Petty catching a 14-yard scoring pass, but the Rattlers entered the locker room trailing 35-14. From that point forward, Southern's defense shut the door. The Jaguars held Florida A&M scoreless throughout the second half, repeatedly disrupting drives and denying the Rattlers opportunities to build momentum. Southern limited Florida A&M to 87 rushing yards on 26 carries, recorded three sacks and stopped the Rattlers on all three fourth-down attempts.
The defense also received strong contributions fromLandon Carter, who recorded six tackles, and Donald Johnson Jr., who finished with three tackles for loss. While Williams' interception return provided the highlight, Southern's collective defensive effort made sure the historic victory was never seriously threatened after halftime.
Jaguars Finish What They Started
Southern's dominance wasn't limited to explosive plays. The Jaguars controlled possession for 36 minutes, 48 seconds, converted 11 of 15 third-down attempts and finished with 423 yards of total offense.
Of those yards, 311 came on the ground. Davis provided the perfect complement to Holly, rushing for 62 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. His second touchdown, a 1-yard run with 1:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, capped the scoring and put the finishing touch on a victory 25 years in the making. Southern also scored on all four of its red-zone opportunities, demonstrating the efficiency that had been missing at critical moments during portions of the season.
The Jaguars didn't simply rely on individual brilliance. They executed in the areas that often determine conference games: third downs, turnovers, time of possession and red-zone efficiency. And on a day when Southern needed to play its most complete brand of football, those details made the difference.
More Than Just Another Win
For Southern, the significance of Saturday's performance extends beyond the final score. Winning at Bragg Memorial Stadium had eluded the Jaguars for a quarter-century. Ending that drought required the kind of balanced, physical and opportunistic performance that can serve as a foundation for the remainder of the season.
Holly gave Southern a workhorse who can control the tempo. Williams gave the Jaguars a defensive playmaker capable of changing a game in an instant. And the supporting cast delivered the consistency needed to turn individual performances into a decisive team victory. The Jaguars left Tallahassee with more than their fourth win of the season. They left with a piece of program history, renewed momentum, and proof that their best football can be difficult to stop. After 25 years of waiting, Southern finally conquered Bragg Memorial Stadium. And the Jaguars did it emphatically
