Southern’s Herman Brister III Earns Aeneas Williams Award HBCU Defensive Back of the Week Honors

BATON ROUGE, LA — Southern University junior safety Herman Brister III delivered one of the most impactful defensive performances of Week 6, earning national recognition as the Aeneas Williams Award HBCU Defensive Back of the Week and Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the Jaguars' 28-14 victory over Prairie View A&M.

Brister, a team captain and key leader in Southern's secondary, helped power a defensive effort that featured four forced turnovers and limited the Panthers to just 179 passing yards. His ability to disrupt Prairie View A&M's passing attack proved instrumental in securing an important conference victory for the Jaguars.

The junior defensive back finished with 10 tackles, including three solo stops, and two interceptions for 56 return yards. His performance showed his versatility as both a reliable tackler and a playmaker capable of shifting a game's momentum.

Brister saved his biggest play for the closing seconds. With just 15 seconds remaining, he intercepted a Prairie View A&M pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown, putting the finishing touches on Southern's 14-point victory. The defensive score provided a dramatic conclusion to a performance that had already established Brister as one of the game's most influential players.

The interception return highlighted Brister's instincts, awareness, and ability to capitalize on opportunities in critical situations. It also reflected a Southern defense that consistently pressured the Panthers into mistakes and prevented their passing attack from finding sustained success. Throughout the contest, Brister played an important role in Southern's defensive execution. His 10 tackles illustrated his involvement across the field, while his two interceptions underscored his effectiveness in pass coverage and his ability to create turnovers.

The Jaguars' four takeaways were a defining factor in the victory, helping Southern control key stretches of the contest and limit Prairie View A&M's offensive opportunities. For Brister, the recognition extended beyond the final score.

Being selected as the Aeneas Williams Award HBCU Defensive Back of the Week placed him among the top defensive backs in historically Black college and university football for Week 6. The weekly honor recognizes outstanding defensive back performances at the HBCU level. The award carries additional significance because of its connection to Aeneas Williams, a Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back and former Southern University standout whose collegiate and professional accomplishments established him as one of the most recognizable figures in the university's football history.

Williams built a distinguished professional career with the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams, earning eight Pro Bowl selections before his 2014 induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. His legacy continues to provide a standard of excellence for defensive backs competing at historically Black colleges and universities. Brister's selection adds another achievement to Southern's defensive tradition while highlighting the talent in the Jaguars' secondary.

His recognition as SWAC Defensive Player of the Week further reinforced the significance of his performance against Prairie View A&M. The conference honor acknowledged his contributions to a Southern defense that generated turnovers, limited passing production, and produced a decisive defensive touchdown.

The two weekly distinctions reflect Brister's impact across multiple phases of the game. As a safety, Brister carries responsibilities that extend beyond defending passes. His position requires him to recognize offensive formations, communicate coverage responsibilities, provide support against the run, and serve as a final line of defense against explosive plays.

His performance against the Panthers showcased those responsibilities, with his double-digit tackle total reflecting his physical presence and his interceptions demonstrating his ability to anticipate and react to passing plays. His leadership role also adds to the performance's significance. As one of Southern's team captains, Brister is counted on to provide consistency and direction for his teammates. Against Prairie View A&M, he complemented that leadership with production, delivering critical plays that contributed directly to the Jaguars' success.

The victory also showed the importance of defensive execution in conference competition, where turnovers and timely stops can decide closely contested games.

Southern's ability to force four turnovers gave the Jaguars additional opportunities while limiting Prairie View A&M's chances to build offensive momentum. Brister accounted for half of those takeaways, turning one interception into points in the final moments. His 47-yard touchdown return was particularly significant because it transformed a defensive stop into an immediate scoring play, providing a fitting conclusion to Southern's effort. For the Jaguars, the performance offered another example of how an opportunistic defense can shape a game's outcome. For Brister, it was a chance to showcase his individual talent while contributing to a team victory.

The national and conference recognition also highlights Southern's defensive program and the level of competition within the SWAC, where individual performances can earn recognition across the broader HBCU football landscape. With 10 tackles, two interceptions, 56 interception-return yards, and a game-sealing touchdown, Brister put together a performance that combined statistical production with decisive moments. As Southern continues conference play, Brister's leadership and ability to create turnovers will remain important components of the Jaguars' defensive identity.

His Week 6 performance not only helped Southern defeat Prairie View A&M but also established him as one of the conference's standout defensive performers, earning recognition that extends well beyond the Jaguars' locker room.
