Jaguars Show Grit in Loss to Prairie View

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern University men's basketball delivered a hard-fought performance Monday evening at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, but came up just short in an 89-85 setback to Prairie View in a tightly contested SWAC matchup.

The Jaguars (5–10, 1–1 SWAC) showcased resilience throughout the contest, battling back from a first-half deficit and engaging in a back-and-forth second half that featured seven lead changes and six ties. Southern outscored Prairie View 47-44 after halftime and had multiple opportunities late to seize control in front of a great home crowd.

Michael Jacobs had a standout performance, finishing with a career and game-high 30 points. He converted 13-of-14 free throws. Jacobs also added five rebounds, four assists and two steals, anchoring the Jaguars on both ends in a game that went down to the final seconds.

Southern's interior presence was fueled by DaMariee Jones, who posted 13 points and eight rebounds, while Malek Abdelgowad added 14 points, connecting on key free throws and baskets that helped keep the Jaguars within striking distance throughout the second half.

The Jaguars received strong contributions from their bench, which totaled 35 points, including Cam Amboree seven points, highlighted by a timely three-pointer that briefly gave Southern the lead midway through the second half. Fazl Oshodi and AJ Barnes also provided valuable minutes and energy as Southern consistently answered Prairie View runs.

Defensively, Southern forced 13 turnovers, converted 17 points off turnovers, and competed on the glass with 38 rebounds while continuing to attack the paint and pressure the ball in transition.
