Jaguars Fall at Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Southern University men's basketball came up just short in a 67-59 loss to Florida A&M Saturday evening at the Al Lawson Center in a tightly contested SWAC match up. 

The Jaguars (5–11, 1–2 SWAC) showed resilience throughout the contest, battling through a physical road environment and cutting the deficit to a single point multiple times late in the second half. Southern trailed just 30-25 at halftime before mounting several strong runs after the break.

Michael Jacobs led Southern with 20 points consistently attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line, where he connected on 9-of-13 attempts. Jacobs also added seven rebounds, three assists and helped keep the Jaguars within striking distance down the stretch. 


Southern's interior play was highlighted by DaMariee Jones, who finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds, while providing a strong presence in the paint. Terrance Dixon Jr. and Fazl Oshodi each chipped in six points. Joe Manning and AJ Barnes combined for 10 points off the bench.

Late in the second half, SU trimmed the margin to 52-53 following back-to-back fast-break baskets by Barnes and again pulled within one at 58-59 with under three minutes remaining after Jacobs three pointer before the Rattlers sealed the game at the free-throw line.

GAME NOTES
  • Southern shot 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor, 15 percent (3-of-20) from the 3-point line and 66.7percent (18-of-27) from the free-throw line
  • The Jaguars grabbed 32 rebounds, with 20 coming on the defensive glass
  • Michael Jacobs had a game high with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assist
  • DaMariee Jones contributed 11 points and seven rebounds
  • Southern finished with 26 points in the paint, 22 points off 18 Rattlers turnovers, 15 fast break points, 11 bench points and six second-chance points 
  • Florida A&M went 22-of-52 from the floor (42.percent), 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from 3-point line and 17-of-20 (85 percent) from the charity stripe
  • The Rattlers grabbed 39 rebounds, with 27 coming on the defensive end
  • Tyler Shirley paced FAMU with 17 points and seven rebounds  
  • Miles Ndalama added 13 points and six rebounds
  • Micah Octave chipped in 1points and eight rebounds
  • FAMU finished with 30 points in the paint, 13 points off 14 SU turnovers, 12 bench points, 10 second chance points and six fast break points
