Jaguars Open SWAC Play with Impressive Home Win Over Texas Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University men's basketball opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play in convincing fashion Saturday evening, securing an 84-73 victory over Texas Southern at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

The Jaguars (5–9, 1–0 SWAC) delivered a strong performance on both ends of the floor, shooting 50.9 percent from the field  and using defensive pressure to control the tempo throughout the contest. Southern built a 42-39 halftime advantage and continued to answer every challenge from the visiting Tigers in the second half.

Michael Jacobs led all scorers with 27 points, showcasing his versatility by shooting 3-of-5 from three-pointers, attacking the basket, six assists and three steals.

The Jaguars received another strong performance from Malek Abdelgowad, who finished with 20 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting, while also pulling down seven rebounds and providing a strong interior presence. The Jaguars outscored Texas Southern 38-30 in the paint, consistently converting high-percentage opportunities.

The Jaguars' defensive intensity proved to be a difference-maker, forcing 17 turnovers and turning them into 21 points, while recording 11 steals as a team. Southern's ball movement was equally effective, tallying 20 assists on 28 made field goals.

Additional contributions came from Cam Amboree, who totaled eight points and eight assists, and DaMariee Jones, who added eight points and six rebounds to support a balanced Southern attack.

  • Southern shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from the 3-point line and 61.8percent (21-of-34) from the free-throw line
