BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University's track and field teams return to action this weekend, traveling to Houston for the Robert Platt Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston at Yeoman Field House on Jan. 30–31.
Southern will be well represented in the field events, led by senior
Lauren Joshua in the women's pole vault. The Jaguars also bring a strong presence in the throws, highlighted by Ayanna Hunt,
Layla Spann-McDonald, and Ariyonna Edmond in the women's weight throw, while
Michael Fulton and
Haywood Gallien headline Southern's men's weight throw entries. In the horizontal jumps,
Azariah Foster,
Peyton Funderburk, and
Demetria Harris are slated to compete in the women's triple jump, with
Reginald King and
Demarion Sowell representing Southern on the men's side.
On the track, Southern will showcase depth in the short sprints and hurdles. Junior Christon Washington and sophomore
Herman Batiste are entered in the men's 60-meter hurdles, while
Tashina Alase anchors a strong women's hurdle group that also includes
Taylor Hankton and
Camille Lewis-Wilson. The Jaguars' sprint contingent features Rondisa Williams,
Kendall Cook,
Sincere Wilson,
Jayla Clark,
Aniyah Glover, and
Demetria Harris in the women's 60-meter dash, giving Southern multiple opportunities to advance through preliminary rounds.
Southern will also see action in the middle distances, with
Bryce Campbell and
Keeton Johnson competing in the men's mile, and
Rayah Arnold,
Doreen Onchangu, and
Shaquka Tyrell taking the track in the women's mile. With athletes spread across nearly every discipline, the Jaguars will look to post season-best marks and gain valuable experience against a competitive field as the indoor campaign continues.
The Robert Platt Invitational marks another important step in Southern's indoor season, as the Jaguars aim to sharpen performances and establish consistency heading into the heart of the schedule.
