BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southern University freshman Keith Fowler was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday, following an impressive showing at last week's LSU Purple Tiger meet.
 
Competing in his first collegiate meet, Fowler placed sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 6 feet, 9.75 inches. After cleanly clearing his first three heights, the freshman missed on his first two attempts at the next bar before responding with a successful jump to stay alive in the competition.
 
That mark ranks second in the SWAC and stands as the best high jump performance in the conference during the week. Fowler's clearance also currently sits ninth in the South Central Region this season, highlighting a strong start to his collegiate career.
