Jaguars Clawed Wildcats in Hard-Fought Road Victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Southern University men's basketball delivered a poised and resilient performance Monday night, closing strong down the stretch to earn a 77-73 road victory over Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium in a tightly contested SWAC match up. 

The Jaguars (6–11, 2–2 SWAC) overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and showcased composure in key moments, outscoring the Wildcats 41-29 in the second half to secure the conference road win. Southern made timely plays on both ends and executed at the free-throw line late to seal the victory.

Malek Abdelgowad led the Jaguars with a game-high 21 points, attacking the paint and converting 9-of-11 free throws while pulling down a team-high 18 rebounds for a dominant double-double performance. Abdelgowad's physical presence and relentless effort proved pivotal in the closing minutes. 


Michael Jacobs added 20 points, knocking down 8-of-11 from the free throw line and delivered the finishing touches by converting two free throws in the final seconds. 


Southern's depth once again played a major role, as the Jaguars' bench accounted for 42 points, Joe Manning finished with 14 points and connected on three three-pointers. Ashton Magee chipped in five points, highlighted by a key basket around the 3:28 mark. DaMariee Jones added nine points and five rebounds going 4-of-5 from the floor. 

The Jaguars dominated the glass, out rebounded the Wildcats 41-37, and generated 21 second-chance points. Consistently extending possessions and wearing down the Wildcats inside. Southern also scored 34 points in the paint and remained aggressive throughout the night. 

GAME NOTES
  • Southern shot 37.9 percent (25-of-66) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from the 3-point line and 73.3percent (22-of-30) from the free-throw line
  • The Jaguars grabbed 41 rebounds, with 24 coming on the defensive glass
  • Malek Abdelgowad came off the bench with a career-high  21 points and 18 rebounds 
  • Michael Jacobs finished with 20 points
  • Joe Manning contributed 14 points off the bench
  • Southern finished with 42 bench points, 34 points in the paint, 21 second chance points, 11 points off 16 Wildcats turnovers, six fast break points
  • Bethune went 25-of-54 from the floor (46.percent), 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from 3-point line and 17-of-21(81 percent) from the charity stripe
  • The Wildcats grabbed 37 rebounds, with 29 coming on the defensive end
  • Jakobi Heady paced BCU with 21 points
  • Quentin Heady added 17 points and eight rebounds
  • BCU finished with 32 points in the paint, 15 fast break points, 14 bench points, 11 off 10 SU turnovers and four second chance points
