Cardell Thibodeaux drafted by the San Diego Padres

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern outfielder Cardell Thibodeaux was picked by the San Diego Padres with the 490th pick in the 16th round of the MLB Amateur Draft on Monday afternoon. The last Jaguars player drafted was Javeyan Williams in 2019. Williams with the 656th pick in the 22nd round.
 
"Seeing Cardell drafted into Major League Baseball is a moment I'll never forget," Southern head coach Chirs Crenshaw said. "He's the first player to be drafted during my time as head coach, and that alone makes this incredibly special. All he needed was someone to believe in him, and he never stopped believing in himself. His journey is a testament to hard work, quiet resilience, and unwavering character. It's been an honor to coach him and to witness his growth on and off the field. This moment is his, but it means so much to all of us who've walked alongside him."

The junior had a noteworthy season as he was the SWAC Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, All-SWAC first team, ABCA Second-Team All-Region and was named to the National College Baseball Writers Association Division I All-American third team. 
 
He was also named to the 2025 Louisiana Sportswriters Association All-Louisiana College Baseball First Team as an outfielder.
 
Thibodeaux finished his season first in the country in slugging percentage (.828), second in batting average (.435) and second in on-base percentage (.541). In 49 games, he also had 73 runs scored, 71 RBIs and 18 home runs, which were first, fifth and second in the SWAC.
