Southern Dominates Savannah State To Pick Up Their First Win Of The Season

BATON ROUGE, LA -- The Jaguars took control of the ball game after Czavian Teasett hit Chandler Whitfield down the left side of the field to give the Jaguars first touchdown of the day. Final score from A. W. Mumford Stadium was 42-10.

"You have to try to give your team a spark so we put Teasett in, let him go and we got on track offensively, said Terrence Graves"


Jaguars backup QB came in the game midway the second quarter to give the Jags a much needed spark and never looked back throwing a career-high 316 yards and three touchdowns. Senior running back, Kendric Rhymes found the endzone off a four-yard run to cap off a nine play fifty-eight yard drive in the third quarter. 
 
Kobe Dillon led SU in rushing for the second straight week with 52 yards off 13 carries,, while the Jaguar receivers led the team in receiving with 247-yards combined of the 363 total passing yards thrown by Czavian Teasett and Noah BoddenDupree Fuller finished the night with three catches for 54 yards with a 31-yard TD catch from Teasett and Jermaine Minor Jr. added another 62 yards off four receptions.

The Jaguars defense proved once again that they are made for the big moments led by nickel back Elijah West with four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakuop. Junior defensive end Darrius Harry finished the night with 4 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry. Southern's defensive backs disrupted Savannah State's  offense all night led by redshirt freshman safety, Herman Brister III with three tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack. 

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE GAME
The Dog Day D held the Tigers to one first down and only 65 yards of total offense.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern picked up 28 first downs, while the Tigers only had 1
  • Southern finished the night with 363 passing yards to Savannah State only having 15 passing yards
  • SU finished the night with 191 rushing yards to the Tigers 50

Southern will be back in action on Saturday, September 14th as they travel I-55 north to Jackson, Ms to take on the Jackson State Tigers. Kickoff is slated for 6:05 p.m. on ESPN+.
