BATON ROUGE, LA -- Jaguars split the season series with the Rattlers knocking them off on Monday night as SU celebrate nine seniors led by fifth year senior Taylor Williams as she closes out her final game at home with a game-high 23 points. Final score from F.G. Clark Activity Center was 67-61.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jaguars went 22-of-58 shooting from the field (37.9 percent) and 3-of-10 from 3PT (30.0 percent).
- SU was led by Williams (7-15 FG, 9-10 FT) along with five boards, two assists and two steals.
- Aniya Gourdine (3-8 FG, 4-4 FT) chipped in eleven points, six rebounds and three steals. Genovea Johnson (4-8 FG, 1-2 FT) finished the night with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Chloe Fleming (3-7 FG, 2-3 FT) added eight points and a game-high six assists.
- Nine Jaguars played scored in the contest with two finishing the night with double digits.
- FAMU shot 24-of-54 from the field (44.4 percent) and 2-of-15 from 3PT (15.4 percent).
- Southern pulled down 35 rebounds, including 20 on the defensive side of the glass.
- The Rattlers registered 26 rebounds, with 21 coming on the defensive end.
- The Jaguars also went 20-for-29 from the free-throw line.
- The Rattlers sank 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
- Southern University finished the night with twelve steals and twelve assists. Fleming had a game-high 6 assists on the night.
- Florida A&M University came away with three steals and eleven assists.
FAREWELL TO OUR SENIORS
On Monday night Southern University Athletics, Board Members and head coach Carlos Funchess said farewell to nine young ladies that has paved the way for the generations to come. Osha Cummings, Ra'von Robertson, Kyanna Morgan, Cayla Obillo, Sky Castro, Taylor Williams, Chloe Fleming, Raven White and Genovea Johnson.
During the 2023 SWAC Championship game Johnson records her 1000th point in a Jaguar uniform. She was honored with a 1K Point ball to record her name in Jaguar Women's Basketball history.
UP NEXT
This will be a short week for the Jaguars as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Alabama State on Thursday night then Travel to Huntsville, Alabama to close out the regular season at Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon. The Jags will take on the Lady Hornets at 5:30 PM on Thursday and the Lady Bulldogs at 3 PM Saturday afternoon.
