Southern Student-Athletes Post High APR Scores

BATON ROUGE, LA -- The NCAA released the 2021-2022 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores earlier this week and Southern University student-athletes continue to produce high marks not only in competition but also in the classroom.

All 15 SU athletic teams exceeded the NCAA Academic Progress (APR) multi-year threshold score of 930, according to the annual APR report released by the NCAA

"APR is a team effort and I am very proud of everyone involved. It is gratifying to have another good year of APR scores, especially when reflected in the scores of our peer groups across the nation," said Roman Banks, SU's Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes have had to overcome a lot of obstacles and challenges since covid-19 but as you can tell they care about their performance both in the classroom and in competition as evident in the buy-in that they have displayed. With the guidance of our academic team, coaches and support staff our student athletes embody character, discipline, and hard work and it shows with consistent successes in each area."

The Southern Jaguars women's volleyball team led the way, achieving a 995 multi-year and a perfect single year (2021-22) score of 1,000. The women's bowling program had a multi-year score of 958, but posted a perfect single year score of 1,000.

Southern football notched a multi-year score of 943, tied for third in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

The Academic Progress Rate (APR) holds institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete each semester.
