Southern Faces Texas Southern in Weekend Series

HOUSTON Coming off a game against the University of Houston on Wednesday, the Jaguars will stay in Houston as they take on Texas Southern in a SWAC weekend series at MacGregor Park. Friday's game is slated for 3 p.m. while Saturday is set for 2 p.m. The weekend finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Southern (5-14, 1-2) fell to Houston, 16-7, at Schroeder Park. The Jaguars lost the SWAC opening weekend series to Grambling.
 
Texas Southern (16-8, 2-1) is entering the series on a two game losing streak. The Tigers lost to Lamar on Tuesday and Arkansas – Pine Bluff on Sunday. TSU did take two of three from UAPB to open conference play.
 
Southern won the first matchup of the season against Texas Southern, an 11-1 game played at Minute Maid Park on opening weekend. TSU has won seven of the last 10 games between the two programs.
 
Southern continues to be led offensively by Jaylen Armstrong, Khyle Radcliffe and Hunter Tabb. Armstrong is hitting a team high of .373 on the year. He also leads the team with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 15 stolen bases. Radcliffe is hitting .286 with three doubles, a triple and a team high 14 RBI. Tabb is third on the team with a .220 average.
 
Friday night starter Jalon Long is 1-1 with a 7.61 ERA while striking out 31 and walking 16 in 23.2 innings of work. Nicholas Wilson has taken the mound for the second game of the series with an 0-2 record and 7.83 ERA. Wilson fanned 24 and gave up 10 walks in 23 innings. Sunday starter, Christian Davis is 0-3 with 10 strikeouts and four walks in 12 innings of work.
 
Texas Southern has six batters hitting over .300 on the season, led by Daalen Adderley at .429. Adderley has a team high of 9 doubles while also having 21 RBI this season, second on the team. CJ Castillo is hitting .372 with five doubles and 19 RBI. Alexander Olivo has a .348 average with a team high 24 RBI.
 
Abraham Deleon is the Tigers opening game starter with a 3.95 ERA and a 1-1 record. Deleon struck out 34 and walked eight in 27.1 innings of work. Domenic Martinez started the past two Saturdays with a 3-1 record and a 3.1 ERA. Martinez has pitched 20.1 innings, striking out 24 and walking 10. Josh Fluet, the likely Sunday starter, is 201 with a 4.91 ERA. Fluet struck out 22 and walked 11 batters in 18.1 innings.
