GRAMBLING, LA – Southern (4-11) is set to begin Southwestern Athletic Conference play on Friday with a three-game series against Grambling (4-12) at Wilbert Ellis Field. The first pitch on Friday and Saturday is set for 6 p.m. and Sunday's contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Southern is coming off a series loss to the University of the Incarnate Word. The Jaguars lost the opening game 6-5, followed by an 11-4 defeat on Saturday and 12-2 final on Sunday.
Grambling won its midweek matchup against Wiley College 9-7 on Tuesday. The previous weekend series, GSU lost all three games to Little Rock.
The Jaguars won the previous meeting this season, 4-3, at the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic in Houston on opening weekend. Southern has an 6-4 advantage over the last 10 meetings in the series.
Jaylen Armstrong and
Khyle Radcliffe continue to lead the Southern offensive attack. Armstrong leads Southern in almost every category with his .412 average, four doubles, a triple, two home runs and seven RBI. Radcliffe is hitting .319 with two doubles and a team high 14 RBI.
Rashard Grace and
JJ Rollon are both batting over .300. Grace is at .313 and Rollon is hitting .308.
Jalon Long has been the Friday night starter this season, posting a 1-1 record with an 8.2 ERA while striking out 23 and walking 13 in 18.2 innings of work.
Nicholas Wilson has taken the mound for the second game of the series with an 0-2 record and 7.11 ERA. Wilson has fanned 21 and giving up seven walks in 19 innings.
Christian Davis has seen action in the last three Sunday finales. Davis has an 0-2 record with nine strikeouts and three walks in 10 innings of work.
The Tigers are led by Kyle Walker and Cameron Bufford at the plate. Walker is hitting .327 with two doubles and seven RBI. Bufford has a .290 average with three doubles, four home runs and 21 RBI. Trevor Hatton has a team high 22 RBI.
Lorenzo Petersen has been the opening night starter for Grambling this season. Petersen is 0-2 with an 8.68 ERA, striking out 10 and walking 14 in 18.2 innings. Connor Rudy has been getting the nod on Saturday. Rudy has a 2-3 record with a 5.48 ERA while striking out 18 and walking 11 in 23 innings of work. The Tigers use an average of five pitchers on Sunday, led by Javier Martinez. Martinez is 0-2 with a 17.05 ERA in 12.2 innings.
