D'IBERVILLE, MS – Head coach
Barry Doyle knew the pattern for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round-Up Two would be one of the most challenging seen this season. The scores on the opening day demonstrated just how much, only 13 of 40 team games were above the 900 threshold, 180 average. The Lady Jaguars were able to navigate the challenges on their way to a 4-1 record and hold a two-game lead over Alabama State and Texas Southern in the SWAC standings.
"The team performed well today," Doyle said. "The pattern is as tough as advertised and the ladies played the lanes as best they could. To be able to go 4-1, with a tough close loss to Texas Southern. I am very pleased with how they performed as a unit today. We still have work to do but control our own destiny."
Southern (39-31, 14-5) opened the day against Alabama A&M with a 917-866 triumph.
Kelsey Quinney led the scoring with a 193.
Lindsey Ugas (189) and
Jailyn Rogers (183) both had strong scores.
Alanna Coward and
Nyla Wilson rounded out the scoring with a 178 and 174, respectively. The win would put the Lady Jaguars in a tie for first.
Alabama State started the day two games behind Southern and would finish the day in the same position. Their only loss on the day would be to the hands of the Lady Jaguars. Southern would come away with a narrow win, 869-852. This time, Wilson would be high on the team with a 200. She was followed by Quinney at 182 and Rogers with a 179.
The Lady Jaguars would extend their win streak to six with an 831-815 win over Jackson State. Rogers would have the highest game on the pair with a 208. After sitting out a game, Coward would come back with a 170.
Southern would end up with its lowest game of the day against Texas Southern but would still have an opportunity to pull it out in the 10th frame. TSU would do just enough to get the 824-807 win, reducing the Lady Jaguars conference lead down to one game. Rogers continued to show why she is one of the best in the SWAC with a 235. Coward would finish with a 182, second highest game on the pair.
The Lady Jaguars would finish out the day by dominating Grambling, 865-658, increasing their conference lead back to two. Quinney would bounce back to lead the charge with a 212. She would be followed by Coward with a 181.
Four Lady Jaguars sit in the top-25 after the first day, led by Rogers in fourth with a 966 for five games. Quinney sits 14th with an 880 and Wilson finished 23rd with an 825.
Overall, Rogers is currently second with a 3,879 for 19 games, giving her a 204.16 average. Coward jumped up two spots to seventh with a 3,380 for 17 games, a 198.82 average. Quinney stayed in the top-15 with her 3,571 for 19 games, 187.95 avg. The top 10 bowlers are awarded all conference honors.
