BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Southern University track and field teams finished the indoor track and field season on a strong note at the Southwestern Athletic Conference championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Jordan Thompson,
Trinity Bolden and
Nicholas Scott came away with SWAC titles.
The Jaguars would finish in sixth place overall with 52 points, while the Lady Jaguars would finish fourth with 51.5 points.
Due to weather conditions the only events held on opening day were the women's pentathlon, men's heptathlon, the 3000m and the distance medley.
Southern got on the board in the men's distance medley by finishing sixth with a time of 10:33.9, starting them with three points.
"We got started on day one competing in the men's and women's multi events," head coach
Teremine White said. "We ended the day in our men's distance medley relay placing sixth. We continued to have a strong second day and finished on a positive note."
The field events started early on the second day, with both teams scoring points.
A'ja Gore and
Lawrenee' Hart started the scoring for the Lady Jaguars in the weight throw. On her first attempt, Gore launched a personal best throw of 55 feet 2.25 inches to finish second by virtue of a tiebreaker. She was tied by Hart, who also set a personal best. Hart broke her personal best on her first attempt with a throw of 53 feet 9.75 inches and broke it again on her third throw to finish third. Charvares Wilson would set his personal best on the men's side with a throw of 54 feet 4.5 inches to finish fourth and give the Jaguars 5 points.
Gore,
Logan Lewis and Hart would all add more points in the shot put. Gore would finish fourth at 42 feet 2.75 inches, Lewis would finish with 41 feet 7 inches for fifth and Hart would end in eighth at 40 feet 2.75 inches.
Keenan Villery and Wilson would finish fourth and fifth on the men's side. Villery would have a distance of 49 feet 4.25 inches and Wilson would finish at 46 feet 4.75 inches.
Another personal best would be broken in the women's long jump. Sitting outside the scoring going into her final attempt,
Azariah Foster would fly 17 feet 11.5 inches to jump into a sixth place showing.
Foster would add more points and set another personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 37 feet 7.75 inches to finish seventh.
Kevon Hamilton would break his own personal best with a distance of 49 feet 10.5 inches to finish second on the men's side.
Three Lady Jaguars would score points in the high jump.
Camille Lewis, Destiny Michell and
Sahnya Lathon would all finish in consecutive order.
Camille Lewis would finish sixth with a height of 5 feet 2.5 inches, followed by Mitchell at the same height and Lathon would finish at 4 feet 11.5 inches.
Running events started with the women's 60m hurdles where
Daisa McKissic continued the scoring for the Lady Jaguars. Her time of 8.89 was good enough for an eighth-place finish. The men's side would follow and Southern would get their first SWAC champion on the day.
Jordan Thompson came into the race as the favorite and did not disappoint. His time of 7.93 would be just behind his personal best of 7.92.
It did not take long for the Lady Jaguars to get their first champion, as Bolden repeated as the SWAC 60m champion with a time of 7.46.
Camille Lewis added more points for the Lady Jaguars with a sixth place finish in the 800m with a personal best of 2:18.2. The Jaguars got their own repeat champion in Scott. He gave the Jaguars 10 points with a time of 1:52.19, over a second faster than second.
Both of the 4x400 teams ended the night adding more team points. The team of

UP NEXT
Southern will start the outdoor season on March 11 when they travel to Lake Charles, Louisiana for the McNeese Cowboy Relays.
