Jaguars Take Team Title, Women Finish Second at Lion Up Invitational

HUSSER, La. – The Southern University cross country teams competed in the Lion Up Invitational, which proved to be a great tune up as six Jaguars finished in the top ten of the men's competition and the men claimed first place, while the Lady Jaguars had five runners finish in the top 10 of the women's race Saturday morning at Covey Rise Lodge.

The men's eight-kilometer race kicked off the day and Lafayette Collins made the most of his first chance at the distance finishing second with a time of 26:32.3. Christian Phillip was the second Jaguars to cross, coming in third in 26:46.2. Bryce Campbell was right behind Phillips in fourth, stopping the clock in 27:14.8. Marcino Taylor made it four Jaguars in a row to come home as he crossed the finish line in fifth in a time of 27:19.1. Cameron Stepter finished sixth in a time of 27:43.7. Ta'Cardrick Alexander rounded out the consecutive Jaguars to cross the finish line in seventh with a time of 27.49.1. Southern finished the match with 20 points overall and finished the meet in first place.

On the women's side, a five-kilometer course was run and Camille Lewis was the first to come home for the Lady Jaguars, stopping the clock in 19:49.3, crossing in second place individually. Taylor Williams finished fourth stopping the clock in a time of 21:34.8. Shani Simon coming home in seventh in a time of 22:50.9. Sierra Session finished eighth overall with a 22.52.2 and Destiny Mitchell rounded out the winning scorers for Southern as she finished 10^th overall, stopping the clock in 23:55.0. SU finished with 31 points, to finish in second place.

UP NEXT
The Jaguars head to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship in Tallahassee, Florida on Monday October 23. The Jaguars will run an 8K course with the women running a 5K course at the Apalachee Regional Park.
