D'IBERVILLE, MS – The Lady Jaguars came out rolling on the second day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Round-Up at Cypress Lanes in D'Iberville, Mississippi. Southern (32-29, 7-3) entered the day in first place and rolled three games over the 1,000-pin mark. Picking up three more wins along the way, the Lady Jaguars would find themselves tied for first after the second day concluded.
"The ladies bowled great today," said head coach
Barry Doyle. "We bowled better than yesterday, and that is saying something after going 4-1."
Southern was looking to hold on to first place in the SWAC in the opening match against defending regular season champion Prairie View A&M. The Lady Jaguars held a small lead throughout the game but PVAMU's fourth and fifth bowlers put together a string of strikes to pull things even going into the final frame. In the end, the Lady Panthers would pull out the game 938-926.
Alanna Coward and
Jailyn Rogers continued to average over 200 for the tournament. Coward finished with 203 and Rogers was right behind at 202.
Kelsey Quinney had a solid 185, followed by
Kymberly Jackson at 178.
The Lady Jaguars did not let that game set them back in the next match. They would end up rolling a 1,039, while FAMU would roll a 1,020. Every Lady Jaguar shot over 182, with three shooting over 200. Quinney would lead the charge at 248, followed by Jackson at 212 and Coward at 203.
Nyla Wilson bounced back after not being able to get anything going on the first day and shot 194. Rogers would round out the scoring with a 182.
"After a slow start yesterday, Nyla steeped her game up today." Doyle said about the sophomore's performance on day two.
After two close games to start the day, the Lady Jaguars decided they did not want the third to come down to the 10th frame. They jumped on Alabama A&M from the beginning and never looked back. They finished the game with a 203-pin margin, 1,059-856. Four Southern bowlers finished the game over 200, with a low game of 194. Coward led the way with a 234, followed by Wilson and Quinney with 214 each. Rogers contributed 203 and Jackson shot 194.
"Kymberly continued to be very steady today," said Doyle about his senior captain. "She threw big shots when we needed them."
Southern would try to keep that momentum up in the next game, but they ran into an Alabama State team that had three bowlers in the 200, one shooting in the 270s. The Lady Jaguars would fall 1,064-919. Wilson would shoot 198, followed by Coward at 193, Rogers at 190 and Quinney at 188.
The final game of the day came against Jackson Sate and strikes were rolling for both teams. Coward and Rogers would both start out hot, but a 10-pin in the sixth for Rogers and 4-pin for Coward in the seventh would end their run at perfection. However, both would still finish with excellent games. Coward would finish with a 255, just ahead of Rogers' 253. Jackson would also finish above 200 at 205. Wilson's 186 and Quinney's 172 would round out the scoring on the day.
"I cannot say enough about the performance of Kelsey, Alanna and Jailyn today," Doyle said. "They were absolutely awesome. We have one more day left of round one competition. There are plenty of SU striking left to do."
