Lady Jaguars Drop Match to GSU

BATON ROUGE, La.The Southern University Lady Jaguars (0-14, 0-2) took on their second conference opponent in as many days inside Seymour Gymnasium Monday night as they fell to Grambling (5-7, 2-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
  • Grambling jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, forcing Southern to use their first timeout of the set.
  • After the timeout, the Lady Jaguars clawed their way back into the set and got as close as 8-7.
  • Xaria Taylor would some huge blocks during the middle of the set to keep the Lady Jaguars in the game.
  • Southern would use their final timeout after GSU extended their lead to 17-12.
  • Southern would not go down without a fight. The Lady Jaguars would pull the score to 23-21, forcing GSU to use their first timeout.
  • GSU would take the first set 25-22.
SET 2
  • Grambling would once again jump out to a huge lead, 8-2, and force Southern to use their first timeout early in set two.
  • Southern would be forced to use their final timeout down 16-7.
  • The Lady Jaguars would continue to push the Lady Tigers till the end. GSU would use their first timeout after three straight points from the Lady Jaguars to make the score 20-16.
  • SU would get the next two points and force GSU to use their final timeout of the set.
  • The Lady Tigers would take the third set 25-19.
SET 3
  • For the third straight set, the Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead and forced SU to take their first timeout down 7-1.
  • Southern responded in a big way, scoring seven of the next nine points to pull within one at 9-8.
  • The third set would be tightly contested the rest of the way and Southern would use their second timeout down 20-17.
  • Teams would trade points the rest of the way, giving Grambling a 25-21 set three win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • GSU would have a 37-20 advantage in kills
  • SU would finish with 12 blocks to five by GSU
  • The Lady Jaguars had 16 assists while the Lady Tigers had 34
  • Southern came away with 43 digs to 57 from GSU
  • Taylor had eight blocks to lead the Lady Jaguars
  • Kyla Carrier had eight assists for Southern
  • Trenity Lundy (10) and Jordan Felix (12) all had double-digit digs
