BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southern University Lady Jaguars (1-14, 1-2) looked to gain momentum ahead of the Southwestern Athletic Conference cluster this weekend. They did just that, picking up a 3-1 victory over Alcorn State Thursday night inside Seymour Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
- The Lady Jaguars came out on fire to start the first set, jumping out to a 7-4 lead and forcing the Braves to use their first timeout.
- Alcorn would fight their way back to gain a 12-11 lead and the Lady Jaguars would use their first timeout.
- Out of that timeout, Southern went on a 14-4 run to close out the first set 25-16.
- The Lady Jaguars finished with three aces in the first set.
SET 2
- The second set would start as a back-and-forth battle between the teams. Southern would hold the lead most of the way.
- With an SU lead of 9-8, the Lady Jaguars would go on a 6-2 run to take a five-point lead.
- The Lady Jaguars would continue to attack the Braves and the final score of 25-18 would reflect that.
- The Lady Jaguars would finish with 14 kills and two more aces in the second set. Dropping their errors to just four.
SET 3
- The Lady Jaguars would start the third set slow, and Alcorn would jump out to an 8-5 lead and for SU to call a timeout.
- Coming out of the break, the Braves would continue to put the pressure and extend their lead to 20-10 and Coach Jacobs would use her final timeout of the set.
- Southern would not give up and after giving up the first point out of the timeout would go on a 6-1 run to close the gap.
- The Lady Jaguars would force the Braves to use their first timeout with the score 24-19. Southern would get one more point but drop the third set 25-20.
SET 4
- Southern would come out looking to close out the match in the fourth set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead and forcing Alcorn to use a timeout.
- From there, things would go back-and-forth for a while until Alcorn would use their final timeout with SU up 17-10.
- Alcorn would try to make a run, but Coach Jacobs would call a timeout with the Lady Jaguars still up 21-16.
- The Braves would finish out on a 6-3 run, but the Lady Jaguars would win the fourth set 25-22 giving them the match win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern would have a 49-33 advantage in kills
- SU would finish with three blocks to five by Alcorn
- The Lady Jaguars had 41 assists while the Braves had 31
- Southern came away with 57 digs to 48 from Alcorn
- Xaria Taylor (13) and Jordan Felix (10) would lead the Lady Jaguars in kills.
- Taylor and Marian Attaway would finish with two blocks apiece
- Kyla Carrier had 25 assists for Southern
- Attaway (13), Carrier (10) and Felix (10) would have double digit digs for the Lady Jaguars
UP NEXT
The first SWAC cluster is set to get started on Sunday, October 9 in Montgomery, Alabama. The Lady Jaguars will take on Jackson State at 11 a.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m. They will return Monday for an afternoon tilt at 1 p.m. against Alabama State.
