Prairie View, TX – Southern University Track and Field teams overcame the heat to finish fourth and sixth at the PVAM Track and Field Stadium for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Prairie View A&M.
The Lady Jaguars picked up points earlier in the day when
Jazzmine Poole and
Logan Lewis claimed third and fourth in the discus. Poole launched the discus a personal record 45.38m on her fourth attempt to claim the bronze. Lewis had a first attempt of 41.62m to claim fourth.
The men got their first points of the day when
Kevon Hamilton stepped up on his second jump and flew a personal best of 15.13m in the triple jump, good enough for a fifth-place finish.
The final races started earlier that original scheduled due to the projected heat index reaching 105 degrees.
The first final of the day was the 4x100, where both teams picked up a fourth-place finished. The team of
A'niya Galloway,
Trinity Bolden,
Malaysia Sinegal and
Kennedy Pedro ran a season best of 46.24. the team of
Kason Jones,
DeAnthony Nervis,
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte and
Jordan Thompson also ran a season best time of 40.84.
Jada Chevalier had trouble in the 100m hurdles but was still able to come away with an eighth-place finish to score another point. Thompson continued to show his speed in a personal best 14.25 in the 110m hurdles to finish with silver.
Points continued to accumulate for both teams in the 400m.
A'nijah Williams ran a 56.55 to finish seventh for two more points, while Jones tied his personal best of 47.52 to finish with five points in fourth.
Bolden came back in the 100m to gain eight more points with a silver in a time of 11.69. Nervis, also in his second race of the day, came away in fifth with a personal best of 10.33.
Scott and
Rushane Miller combined to give the Jaguars 14 more points in the 800m. Scott completed the indoor and outdoor sweep of the event. His winning time of 1:50.43 was 2 seconds faster than second. Miller finished in fifth with a time of 1:53.13, on .65 seconds behind second.
Nervis ran his third final of the day when he stepped up to the line in the 200m. He continued his phenomenal performance with a personal best of 20.78 so secure third and give the Jaguars six more points.
The final events of the day, the 4x400, saw both teams finding themselves on the podium. The team of Williams,
Trinity Kirk,
Shani Simon and
Qymeisha Mayhew ran a season best of 3:43.61 to capture bronze. The team of Thompson, Scott, Nervis and Jones were not going to be outdone by their counterparts. They too ran a season best time of 3:09.65 and came away with the top spot and the final 10 points for the Jaguars.

Both teams will wait to see what the qualifying times for the NCAA East Regional will be. The regional will be held in Bloomington, Indiana on the campus of Indiana University at the Robert C. Haugh Complex.
