Bloomington, Ind. – The Southern University Track and Field season come's to an end in Bloomington, Indiana at the NCAA East Regional hosted by Indiana University.
The Jaguars qualified at least one athlete for the regional for the first time since 2013, when they also sent two.
Jordan Thompson was the first to take the blocks for Southern in the 400m hurdles. Being in the fourth heat gave Thompson an opportunity to gauge the time needed to qualify for the finals. The top three finishers in each heat, plus the next six fastest times would qualify. Starting in lane five, Thompson would visualize what needed to be done but would ultimately come up short. Finishing with a time of 54.64, he would settle for 46th in a loaded field.
Immediately following Thompson's event,
DeAnthony Nervis would take the track for the 200m. Nervis got his start in the first heat and would sit in sixth with a time of 20.83. He would have to wait five more heats to see if his time would be one of the top 24 for the finals. At the halfway point, he would be holding on to the final qualifying spot. Eventually, in the fourth heat, Diamantae Griffin from Liberty University would knock him out that spot by 0.002 seconds. Nervis would finish just three spots out at 27, and 0.046 seconds behind the final spot.
The Jaguars finish the season with five Southwestern Athletic Conference Champions and 10 All-SWAC finishers in the Indoor and Outdoor seasons. The Jaguars were one of four SWAC schools to send two athletes to the NCAA East Regional.
