Jaguars Gain Momentum for SWAC Championships

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Southern University Jaguars were looking to improve their positioning for the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships in two weeks. They were able to put on a strong showing and improve their standings Saturday at the LSU Alumni Gold at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Coming into the meet, the Lady Jaguars had five of the top-10 in the discus. Looking to improve on their season mark against stiff competition, the women came up just short of their goal but are still in outstanding position heading into the SWAC Outdoor Championships in two weeks. Logan Lewis was able to finish in tenth place for the meet with a throw of 41.57m.

On the men's side, Char'Vares Wilson came into the meet sitting in seventh in the SWAC. Even though he did not improve his standing, he was able to improve his mark with a throw of 41.73m. Garrick Breaux was able to jump into eighth in the SWAC with a throw of 41.7m.

The Jaguars continued the throwing events with the shot-put. Lewis and Lawrenee' Hart finished in the top-10 with distances of 13.17m and 12.92m. A'ja Gore and Alexandria McCoy were able to improve their standings in the SWAC. Gore's throw of 12.78m jumped her all the way to sixth. McCoy's positioned stayed the same with Gore coming into the top-10 but improved her season best mark to 12.57m.

The men placed all four throwers inside the top-10. Keenan Villery was top Jag in sixth with a throw of 14.76m. He was followed by Wilson in eighth at 14.15m, Breaux setting his personal best of 12.65m for ninth and Kolby Mathews in 10 place at 12.21m.

In the hammer-throw, Wilson and Mathews improved on their season best with throws of 39.97m and 38.32m to stay inside the top-10 heading into SWAC.

Villery would come back in the javelin and place third with a throw of 49.17m. Freshman Uzuri Graves would see her best throw as a Jaguar at 34.08m for a second-place finish, her previous best of 33.88m was also set at LSU on April 2. Karanay Alexander would also set a personal best of 32.38m, moving her up a spot to sixth in the SWAC.

Ja'Carrius Demmerritte would come in and set a season best distance of 7.04m in the triple jump, moving him into sixth. Kevon Hamilton would set a personal best of 6.6m.

Kashi Roberts would come into the 1500m and set a new PR of 5:42.75. Tallan James would do the same on the men's side with a time of 4:08.29.

If not for the wind speed being 3 m/s, both Jada Chevalier and Alexander would have set PRs of their own in the 100m hurdles. Chevalier would finish in ninth with a time of 13.99, just .02 seconds and two spots behind Olympian Lolo Jones. Alexander finished with a time of 15.04. Devin Sowell was able to set his personal best at 15.61 in the 110m hurdles, the wind had died down to only 1.5 m/s which is below the legal speed of 2 m/s.

Kennedy Pedro would see her personal best fall with a run of 12.08 in the 100m, sitting her just outside of 10th going into SWAC Championships.

In a crowded field, Nicholas Scott set a new personal best of 1:49.498. He would be edged out for second by .005 seconds.

With just a few events left on the day, Sierra Session would set a new personal best of 1:04.33 in the 400m hurdles, good enough for eighth. The men saw Jordan Thompson and Ta'Cardrick Alexander both land inside the top-10. Thompson would finish in sixth at 53.55, while Alexander would finish ninth at 55.18.

The 200m would have the same problem as the 100m hurdles, with the wind at 2.5 m/s records could not be broken. Both, Malaysia Sinegal and Kavin Roberts Jr. would have set personal best. Sinegal finished with a time of 25.07, while Roberts finished at 22.52.
