HAMMOND, LA – With the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Championships only three weeks away, the Southern University Track and Field teams took to the track for the Strawberry Relays at the Southeastern Track Complex in Hammond, LA to improve their positioning.
All six of the Lady Jaguars participating in the shot-put finished inside the top-15.
Logan Lewis led the strong showing, finishing fifth with a throw of 12.69m.
Lawrenee' Hart (12.4m),
Alexandria McCoy (11.98m),
Ja'Myla Williams (11.63) and
A'ja Gore (11.47m) finished seventh through 10th to give the Lady Jaguars five of the top-10. Williams, who completed only her third meet for Southern, continued to improve her mark by setting a new personal best.
Keenan Villery had a strong showing on the men's side. Villery finished with his personal best of 15.19m to finish third and continues to hold strong for fourth in the SWAC standings.
Southern took the momentum from the shot-put into the next event, discus. The Lady Jaguars once again put five in the top-10.
Jazzmine Poole would have the longest distance at 42.26m for a fourth-place finish.
Logan Lewis was fifth at 41.71m.
Schrell Chevalier set a personal record of 37.58m for seventh. She was followed by Hart (37.58m) and
Kaila Poole (36.9m) for eighth and ninth.
London Lewis and
Garrick Breaux would both finish inside the top-10.
London Lewis would finish in eighth at 39.06m and Breaux would settle for ninth at 37.12m.
London Lewis' throw in the discus would be a season best and catapult him into 10th in the SWAC.
Jazzmine Poole (third),
Schrell Chevalier (seventh) and
Kaila Poole (10th) would also see their marks make them in the top-10.
Javelin was up next and both Southern athletes throwing would set personal best and move into the top-10.
Karanay Alexander would throw a distance of 30.95m, which was good for sixth at the meet and seventh in the SWAC. Villery would set his second personal best on the day with a throw of 50.92m for another third-place finish while moving into third SWAC wise.
Yahria Bass would come into the long jump with a personal best of 4.86m. She would shatter that record by .81m or two and half feet. Her distance of 5.65m would be good enough for second and move her into fifth for SWAC. Alexander would be the only other Lady Jaguar competing in the event. She would finish seventh with a distance of 5.36m.
Levi Matthews III would set a personal best for the men at 6.48m.
Long distance running is nothing new to
Nicholas Scott, but he would run the 1500m for the first time since his freshman season and finish with a time of 4:04.48. His time would see him move into eighth in the SWAC.
Tallan James and
Lafayette Collins would both set personal best with times of 4:09.40 and 4:14.86.
Freshman
Jada Chevalier continues to make a name for herself in the 100m hurdles.
Jada Chevalier would finish in third with a time of 14.34, moving her into fifth in the SWAC.
Jordan Thompson would finish second in the 110m hurdles. Thompson's time of 14.68 was only second behind Maaik Marshall of the US Express Elite Track Club. His mark also moved him up to second in the SWAC.
A'nijah Williams,
Shani Simon and
Kennedy Pedro would all finish in the top-10 for the 400m. Williams would take the win with a time of 56.63. Simon's time of 58.22 would set her new personal best to give her a seventh-place finish. Pedro would be right behind her in eighth at 58.77.
Sierra Session would set her own personal best time of 59.95.
Kason Jones would be the lone male to finish in the top-10. His time of 48.99 would be good for seventh. Matthews would set another personal best on the day with a time of 50.29.
Jada Chevalier would come back to set another personal best, this time in the 100m. She would finish with a time of 12.73.
DeAnthony Nervis would be the top male performer finishing sixth with a time of 10.85.
A week after having his six-meet win streak snapped, Scott would find himself on the top podium again. He would finish with a time of 1:54.12.
Thompson would compete in his second of his for events in the 400m hurdles. He would go on to set a season best time of 52.1 for a third-place finish. His improvement of almost a second, Thompson put a tighter grip on second in the SWAC.
Pedro and Nervis would be the only Southern athletes to finish inside the top-10 for the 200m. Pedro would settle for eighth with a time of 25.41. Nervis would finish second at 21.25.
The relay teams would have strong showings on the day. The team of Pedro,
Trinity Kirk,
A'niya Galloway and
Malaysia Sinegal would finish with a time of 46.79 in the 4x100, good enough for second. On the men's side, the team of Jones, Nervis,
Kavin Roberts Jr. and Thompson would set a season best time of 41.24, placing them in fifth. The 4x400 would see Williams, Simon, Sinegal and Pedro get a time of 4:00.24. The men would have Thompson, Jones, Nervis and Scott run a time of 3:24.94 to finish fourth.

The Jaguars will have their final regular season meet when they head back to LSU for the LSU Alumni Gold on April 23 at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium.
