BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Southern University Jaguars placed seven athletes on the All-SWAC team for Track and Field as announced by the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The All-SWAC team was comprised of the top-two athletes in each event from the SWAC Indoor Championships held on February 17-18.
Three Jaguars won their events and four others placed second to earn their accolades.
One Jaguar to win their event was sophomore
Trinity Bolden with a school record 7.4 seconds in the 60m. Bolden set a personal record of 7.52 earlier in the season at the Samford open to win the event, she went on to tie that at the Houston G5 and Super 22.
"Trinity (Bolden) came in and stepped up big," said Head Coach
Teremine White about Bolden's school record. "She has been running well all year. Her future is really bright, and she will only get better."
The second athlete to take home a SWAC crown was
Char'Vares Wilson. Wilson was able to outthrow Davieon Center of Jackson State by half a meter to take home the crown in the weight throw with a distance of 16.22m, beating his previous record by two meters.
"Wilson wasn't projected to score," White said. "He was another one to come up big for us by winning."
The third Jaguar to take home the gold was
Nicholas Scott in the 800m with a time of 1:52.68, two seconds ahead of second and only 1.5 seconds behind his personal best. Scott won the final three 800m races of the indoor season.
"Nick Scott came in and ran his race," said White. "He was having fun out there. He is one of the best athletes in our conference."
Keenan Villery would set the bar high for the shot-put with his first throw setting a personal best of 14.62m. He would come back on his second and improve it to 14.65m. He would end up getting out thrown for the crown but would still hold on to runner-up.
The final group of Jaguars to claim All-SWAC was the men's 4x400 team of
Kason Jones,
DeAnthony Nervis,
Jordan Thompson and Scott. The group got off to a slow start but took a slight lead in leg two and three. They would end up getting edged out by Prairie View A&M by less than a second. Their time of 3:16.84 would be the season best by over three seconds.
"The men's 4x400 ran the best of the season," White said. "They got edged at the line for second but (Nicholas) Scott was down about 15m in the second leg and closed the gap."
Next up for the Jaguars is the start of outdoor season. The first meet will be at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA on March 12.
