Baton Rouge, LA– The Southern University Track and Field teams took the short trip across town to participate in the Bayou Bengal hosted by LSU at the Carl Maddox Field House on Friday, February 4 and came away satisfied.
The Jaguars were looking to improve their positions ahead of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships in two weeks.
"I think we had some really great performances today," Head Coach
Teremine White said about the team's marks on the day. "The athletes are coming into their own leading into conference (SWAC Indoor Championships). We have next week off and go into conference in good shape."
The day started with the women's weight throw.
Jazzmine Poole,
Lawrenee' Hart, and
Alexandria McCoy, all made it to the top-9 after the preliminary round. Poole settled for ninth with her second throw of 13.88m. Hart improved her first-round throw of 15.11m to 15.16m in her first throw of the finals to finish sixth. McCoy, who currently sits in second in the SWAC, improved her position in the meet with her final throw of 16.27m to finish in second. Freshman
A'ja Gore was able to set a new personal best in her final throw with a distance of 13.63m.
In the men's weight throw,
Char'Vares Wilson was able to set a season best throw of 14.02m that placed him in 10
th.
Kolby Mathews also set a season best throwing a distance of 12.09m.
In the shot-put, the Jaguars put four in the top-10 on the women's side and two on the men's side.
Logan Lewis had a personal best throw of 13.4m to finish fourth. Gore, McCoy, and Hart all finished in the top-10. Gore's throw of 12.97m placed her fifth. McCoy's 12.11m, and Hart's 11.68m placed them in ninth and 10
th respectively.
Keenan Villery and Wilson finished in sixth and eighth for the men. Villery threw a distance of 14.17m and Wilson had a distance of 13.98m.
The long jump and triple jump continued to be a strong event for the Jaguars. Four Jaguars placed in the top-10 in the long jump while three of those placed for the triple jump.
Katrina Anderson was the lone woman to place in either event. She finished with a personal best of 5.46m to finish seventh.
Ja'Carrius Demmerritte,
Kevon Hamilton, and
Rasheed Ricketts place in the top-10 for both. Demmerritte had a distance of 7.02m in the long jump and 14.49m in the triple to finish fourth in both. Hamilton finished third in the triple,14.5m, while placing eighth in the long jump, 6.49m. Rickett had a distance of 13.71m for eighth in the triple and 6.08m for 10
th in the long jump.
The 60m were up first in the running events.
A'niya Galloway and
Jada Chevalier both set personal best. Galloway with a time of 7.94 and Chevalier's was 8.14.
Anndrela Woods had a season best time of 7.87.
DeAnthony Nervis set a season best of 6.8 in the semis before running a 6.81 in the finals to place third on the men's side.
The 60m hurdles saw more Jaguars set personal and season best times.
Jordan Thompson ran a time of 8.56 in the finals to finish sixth.
Jarden James set a season best time of 8.51 while
Devin Sowell had a personal best of 8.75. On the women's side, Chevalier set a personal best of 8.81 in the finals to finish eighth.
Karanay Alexander and
Shatoya Linzer both set season best. Alexander finished at 9.86 and Linzer finished at 9.51.
For the second week in a row,
Lafayette Collins set personal best in his two events. He improved on his mile time from last week to finish ninth with a time of 4:37.86. Later in the afternoon, he took to the track in the 3k and finished fifth with a time of 9:23.35.
The Jaguars picked things up in the 400m. Nine Jaguars placed in the top-10.
Qymeisha Mayhew was the fastest on the women's side, finishing with a time of 58.62 for second.
A'nijah Williams,
Trinity Kirk, and
Shani Simon finished fifth through seventh. Williams' time of 59.21 was a personal best. Kirk finished at 59.27 and Simon at 59.6.
Kennedy Pedro rounded out the top-10 with a time of 1:00.27.
Kason Jones picked up his first win on the season with a time of 49.85 in the 400m.
Rushane Miller and
Ta'Cardrick Alexander ran the 400 for the first time this season and finished sixth and eighth. Miller had a time of 51.37 and Alexander had a time of 51.81.
Levi Matthews III wasn't far behind in ninth with the time of 52.22.
Nicholas Scott picked up another win in the 800m this season. This time he finished with a time of 1:53.34. Scott currently leads the SWAC at 1:52.5.
"(Nicholas) Scott and
Kason Jones have been doing a great job," said White about the two's performance. "They are super hard workers, and they are reaping the benefits of the work they put in at practice."
The 200 was next and this time the Jaguars place four in the top-10. Pedro finished fifth at 26.15 while Simon finished seventh at 26.44. James and
Terrell Chevalier finished in seventh and eighth for the men. James had a time of 23.57 and Chevalier came in at 23.76.
The final events of the day was the 4x400. The women's 4x400 team placed in the top-2 once again. This time the team of Williams, Kirk, Simon, and Mayhew ran a time of 3:53.74 to finish second. The men's 4x400 team of Scott, Miller, Alexander, and Thompson also finished second. They finished with a time of 3:20.24.
