P.J. Byrd Double-Double Not Enough, As Southern Comeback Falls Short At Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Oh. | P.J. Byrd and Bryson Etienne led Southern University men's basketball in double figures with 16 points as the Jaguars comeback falls short 85-81 to Youngstown State University Friday night at the Beeghly Center.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field, 44.0 percent (11-of-25) from the 3-point line and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free-throw line
  • P.J. Byrd finished offensively with his first career double-double in a Southern uniform with 16 points and career-high 12 assists
  • Bryson Etienne registered 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting and four steals 
  • Terrell Williams Jr. scored 13 points and four rebounds
  • JaRonn Wilkens finished with 10 points and four rebounds
  • Southern finished with 34 bench points, 26 points in the paint, 22 bench points, 16 fast break points, 12 points off 17 Penguins turnovers and 11 second-chance points
  • YSU went 28-of-54 (51.9 percent) from the floor, 5-of-15 (33.3) from the 3-point line and 24-of-31 (77.4 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Dwayne Cohill, Malek Green, Brandon Rush and Adrian Nelson all scored in double figures for the Penguins. Cohill finished with a team-high 26 points
  • YSU finished with 40 points in the paint, 21 fast break points, 19 points off 14 SU Turnovers, 14 bench points and 10 second-chance points

Southern continues its third game of the three-game road trip on Sunday Dec. 18 at Bartow Arena against University of Alabama Birmingham. Tip-off against the Blazers is set for 3:30 p.m. central time and the game will be live on CBS Sports Network.
