Southern Edged On The Road At Xavier

Cincinnati, Oh. | Brion Whitley led Southern University men's basketball in double figures with 17 points as the Jaguars were edged 79-59 by Xavier University Tuesday night at the Cintas Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Xavier (8-3) raced out to an 5-0 lead after a made layup by Jack Nunge with 18:29 left in the opening half
- A Whitley 3-point jumper put the Jaguars on the board with 17:48 remaining in the first
- The Musketeers used a 14-7 run over the next five minutes to extend the advantage to 19-10 after a Colby Jones 3-point bucket with 12:21 left
- The Jaguars kept hanging around and cut the margin to 19-15 after a jumper by Whitley with 11:36 remaining
- Xavier went on a 11-0 run, capped by a Zach Freemantle dunk to push the margin to 31-15 with 6:16 left in the first half
- Southern answered with a 9-7 run over the next four minutes to cut the advantage 38-24 after a Bryson Etienne 3-pointer 
- XU would take a 40-24 lead into the break
- Southern never got any closer down the stretch as Xavier pulled away for the victory

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from the 3-point line and 90.0 percent (9-of-10) from the free-throw line
  • Brion Whitley led the way offensively with 17 points, on 6-of-13 from the floor and two steals
  • Bryson Etienne registered nine points on 3-of-7 shooting and four rebounds 
  • Dre'Shawn Allen scored nine points
  • Southern finished with 26 points in the paint, 22 bench points, 18 fast break points, 13 points off 19 Xavier turnovers and six second-chance points
  • Xavier went 29-of-60 (48.3 percent) from the floor, 9-of-27 (33.3) from the 3-point line and 12-of-18 (66.7 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Souley Boum, Zach Freemantle, Jack Nunge and Colby Jones all scored in double figures for the Musketeers. Boum finished with a team-high 17 points
  • XU finished with 32 points in the paint, 23 points off 20 SU Turnovers, 20 fast break points, 17 bench points and seven second-chance points 
UP NEXT 
Southern continues its second game of the three-game road trip on Friday Dec. 16 at Beeghly Center against Youngstown State University. Tip-off against the Penguins is set for 7:00 p.m. central time and the game will be live on ESPN+.
