Southern Men's Basketball Runs Past LSU-Alexandria 98-76

BATON ROUGE, La. | Brion Whitley scored a season-high 27 points and dished out three assists to lead four Southern players in double-figure scoring, as the Jaguars beat LSU-Alexandria 98-76 on Saturday in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.  
 
Southern (4-5) jumped out to a 12-4 lead off a Whitley 3-point jumper. The Generals would come back and tie the ballgame 33-33. Whitley fourth made 3-pointer on the night started Southern's 9-0 run to finish the first half with a 45-36 halftime lead. The Jaguars turned over the Generals 12 times in the first half while Southern shoot 43.8 percent from behind the arc while scoring 14 points off turnovers.
 
The second half both teams came out trading baskets. Jakemin Abney 3-pointer got the Generals within seven points 49-42 with 16:20 remaining, but that would be the closest they would get. Southern capped of a 17-6 run after Whitley made layup extending the Jaguars lead 66-48 with 12:15 to go and Southern pulled away for the 98-76 victory. 
 
In the final 20 minutes, Southern dished out 16 assists while turning it over only five times. Shooting 56.8 percent from the floor and 43.8 from behind the arc.
  
INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 50.7 percent (38-of-75) from the field, 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the 3-point line and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free-throw line
  • Brion Whitley led the way offensively with a season-high 27 points, on 8-of-12 from the floor, 6-10 from downtown and three assists
  • Dre'Shawn Allen finished with a season-high 17 points 
  • Terrell Williams Jr. finished with his second career double-double as he had 13 points and 10 rebounds
  • P.J. Byrd added 10 points and game-high seven assists
  • Southern finished with 44 bench points, 36 points in the paint, 20 points off 18 Generals turnovers, 18 second-chance points and 11 fast break points 
  • LSU-Alexandria went 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) from the floor, 7-of-28 (25.0) from the 3-point line and 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Generals finished with 42 bench points, 30 points in the paint, 18 fast break points, 11 points off 10 SU turnovers and eight second-chance points
UP NEXT 
Southern heads back on the road for a three-game road swing. First up is a matchup with Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH on Tuesday Dec. 13 at the Cintas Center. Tip-off against the Musketeers is set for 6:00 p.m. central time and the game will be televised on Fox Sports 1.
