Southern Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, NV. | The Southern University men's basketball team fought hard, but their comeback attempt was just short as they dropped the season opener Monday night on the road to UNLV 66-56.  Bryson Etienne led SU in his Jaguar debut, scoring a team-high 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

UNLV (1-0) raced out to a 11-3 advantage and stretched the margin to 22-11 after two free throws by Keshon Gilbert with just over 8:30 left in the first half.
A great alley-oop pass from P.J. Byrd to Tyrone Lyons started Southern (0-1) on a 9-2 run capped off by Lyons 3-pointer to cut the Runnin Rebels lead 24-20.

UNLV would close out the half on a 9-5 run and head into halftime with a 33-25 advantage.

Much like the first half ended, the start of second half both teams were back and forth and used strong defensive efforts until Etienne scored the next nine points for the Jaguars which started a 11-6 run. Terrell Williams jumper at the 16:27 mark closed the UNLV advantage to 39-36.

The Runnin Rebels answered and went on 12-0 run, to extend the advantage to 51-36.

Finding themselves down by 17 points with 8:01 remaining in the game, SU dug in defensively and held UNLV scoreless for 6:00 minutes.

Jalen Reynolds jumper at the 7:40 mark, stated a 10-0 run for the Jaguars. During that time JaRonn Wilkens made four straight free throws, Etienne made a 3-pointer and Jalen Reynolds made a free throw to cut the 63-56 advantage with 2:23 left.

SU wouldn't get any closer as UNLV finished the game on a 3-0 run and pulled away for the 66-56 victory.
