Jaguars fall to #17 Arizona 95-78

TUCSON, Az. | Bryson Etienne poured in a team-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Southern University men's basketball team fell, 95-78, to #17 University of Arizona Friday night at the McKale Center part of the SWAC/Pac-12 Legacy Series.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Arizona (2-0) raced out to an 10-0 lead after a made layup by Pelle Larsson with 16:38 left in the opening half
- A P.J. Byrd pullup jumper put the Jaguars on the board with 16:19 remaining in the first
- The Wildcats used a 12-7 run over the next four minutes to extend the advantage to 22-11 after a Azuolas Tubelis 3-point bucket with 11:08 left
- The Jaguars kept hanging around and cut the margin to 26-17 after back-to-back 3-pointers by Bryson Etienne with just under nine minutes remaining
- A free throw by Larsson gave the Wildcats a 49-30 lead with thirty five seconds left as Arizona took the 18-point lead into the break
- A made layup by Tubelis just two minutes into the second half pushed the lead to 55-31
- Back came Southern, cutting the double-digit deficit to 67-49 after back-to-back 3-point jumpers by Brion Whitley with 12:02 remaining
- The Wildcats used an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to extend the advantage 79-48

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from the 3-point line and 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the free-throw line
  • Etienne led the way offensively with 17 points, on 6-of-16 from the floor, along with four steals, four assist and three rebounds 
  • Tyrone Lyons registered 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting, three steals and two assist
  • Festus Ndumanya scored a season-high 11 points and five rebounds
  • Southern finished with 28 bench points, 26 points in the paint, 16 points off 19 Arizona turnovers, 13 fast break points and 12 second-chance points 
  • Arizona went 30-of-55 (54.5 percent) from the floor and 30-of-46 (65.2) from the charity stripe
  • Pelle Larsson, Azuola Tuebelis and Oumar Ballo lead the Wildcats with 17 points each
  • Kerr Kriisa added 14 points, 12 assist and 11 rebounds
  • Arizona finished with 48 points in the paint, 28 bench points, 17 second-chance points and 13 points off 11 SU turnovers
UP NEXT
Southern continues its four-game road swing on Wednesday Nov. 16 at the University Credit Union Pavilion against Saint Mary's College of California. Tip-off against the Gales is set for 7:30 p.m. central time and the game will be streamed live on WCC network.
