Jaguars Cruise Past Tougaloo in Exhibition Win, 91-44

BATON ROUGE, LA. | The Southern University men's basketball team opened up the 2022-23 season in dominate fashion defeating Tougaloo College 91-44 in an exhibition game Thursday night at the F. G. Clark Activity Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern started slow, before finding their footing and extending their lead 26-10, off Kris Gardner layup in the first half.
- Brion Whitley hit a three pointer to boost the Jaguars lead to a 15 point advantage. 
- Dre'Shawn Allen followed right behind Whitley knocking down another three pointer, extending the lead to 18 points and SU never looked back.
- The Jaguars were too much for the Bulldogs as SU pulled away for a 44-26 halftime lead.
- Stifling defense in the second half kept the bulldogs to only 18 points, as SU was too much for the Bulldogs, sealing the 91-44 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Southern went 35-of-68 shooting from the field (51.5 percent) and 15-of-36 from 3PT (41.7 percent).
- The Jaguars had three players finish in double digit scoring.
- Southern was led by Bryson Etienne (6-10 FG, 4-7 3PT) who finished with 16 points and two steals.
- Brion Whitley (5-10 FG, 3-8 3PT) finished the night with 15 points and four assist. Dre'Shawn Allen pitched in 13 points.
- 12 Jaguars scored in the contest
- TC shot 13-of-43 from the field (30.2 percent) and 1-of-12 from 3PT (8.3 percent). 
- Southern pulled down 46 rebounds, including 31 on the defensive side of the glass
- Tougaloo registered 25 rebounds, with 19 coming on the defensive end 
- The Jaguars also went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line
- The Bulldogs sank 17-of-33 from the charity stripe
- Southern finished the night with 25 assist and 10 steals
- TC came away with eight steals

UP NEXT
Southern will head to Las Vegas, Nevada to face off with UNLV on Monday night to tip off the 2022-23 non-conference schedule. Start time is set for 9:15 p.m. CT and will be televised on Mountain West Network / Silver States Sports Entertainment Network.
