Whitley Paces Two in Double Figures, Jaguars Fall to Gales

Moraga, Ca. | Brion Whitley led two Southern University men's basketball players in double figures with 15 points as the Jaguars dropped an 72-54 decision to Saint Mary's College Wednesday night at the University Credit Union Pavilion.  
 
The Jaguars trailed, 38-34 with 15:04 left to play in the second half. However, the Gales proved to be too much in picking up the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Mary's (4-0) raced out to an 5-0 lead after a made layup by Logan Johnson with 18:43 left in the opening half
- A Bryson Etienne pullup jumper put the Jaguars on the board with 17:04 remaining in the first
- The Gales used a 11-5 run over the next four minutes to extend the advantage to 16-7 after a Aidan Mahaney 3-point bucket with 13:43 left
- The Jaguars kept hanging around and cut the margin to 22-16 after a layup by Whitley with 10:31 remaining
- Saint Mary's went on a 9-2 run, capped by a Mitchell Saxen layup to push the margin to 31-19 with 5:04 left in the first half
- Southern answered with a 8-2 run over the next four minutes to cut the advantage 33-27 after a Brion Whitley driving layup 
- SMC would take a 35-27 lead into the break
- The Jaguars opened the second half on a 7-3 run to close the gap 38-34 off Festus Ndumanya layup with 16:32 remaining 
- A Mitchell Saxen layup propelled the Gales to a 11-4 run to extend the lead 49-38 with 11:29 in the second half 
- Southern never got any closer down the stretch as Saint Mary's pulled away for the victory

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 
  • Southern shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the 3-point line and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the free-throw line
  • Brion Whitley led the way offensively with 15 points, on 6-of-10 from the floor and two blocks
  • Festus Ndumanya registered 10 points on 4-of-10 shooting and four rebounds 
  • Bryson Etienne scored nine points
  • Southern finished with 26 points in the paint, 16 bench points, 10 points off 15 Gales turnovers, nine second-chance points and seven fast break points 
  • Saint Mary's went 23-of-53 (43.4 percent) from the floor, 11-of-26 (42.3) from the 3-point line and 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe
  • Mitchell Saxen, Aidan Mahaney, Alex Ducas, Logan Johnson and Kyle Bowen all scored in double figures for the Gales. Saxen finished with a team-high 17 points
  • SMC finished with 22 points in the paint, 20 bench points, 11 second-chance points and 13 points off 12 SU turnovers 
UP NEXT 
Southern continues its final game of the four-game road trip on Friday Nov. 18 at Haas Pavilion against University of California. Tip-off against the Golden Bears is set for 8:00 p.m. central time and the game will be live on Pac-12 network.
