Lady Jaguars Upend Jackson State 1-0

BATON ROUGE, LA – In a battle between two of the more physical teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Southern University (8-8-2, 5-3-1) defeated the SWAC regular season champions Jackson State University 1-0. The loss was the first for JSU in conference play this season. The win gave Southern their most wins in a single season and conference wins since 2013.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The physicality started early in the game with the defenses taking control for most of the first half. Jackson State would commit seven fouls, while Southern would commit six.
  • The teams would start the second half attacking, as each team would get two shots within the first 15 minutes.
  • The Lady Jaguars thought they took the lead when Giftee Tor got a shot off inside the box, but the shot would just miss, bouncing off the crossbar.
  • Victoria Thomas would get her first game winner, in just her fourth career goal, when she secured a deflection and sent it across the box to the bottom left corner in the 71st minute.
  • Tor would find the back of the net in the 88th minute, but an offsides on the Lady Jaguars would negate the score.
  • Jackson State would have two shots at tying the game in the final minute, but a save by Sydney Bellamy and a block on the rebound shot would secure the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Southern would have a 15-10 advantage on shots.
  • The Lady Jaguars would double JSU in shots on goal, 8-4.
  • Jackson State would finish with seven saves, compared to four by Southern.
  • Both teams would finish with double digit fouls. Southern had 15 and Jackson State had 15.
  • Southern would get four corners in the second half, while JSU would get one in each half.
